ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell senior defensive end
Seth Hope has been named to the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-America Division I Football first team it was announced today. Hope becomes the fifth Big Red football player to twice be honored as a two-time Academic All-American after capturing second team honors in 2016 by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Hope joined Harvard linebacker Alex White on the first team, while Columbia running back Chris Schroer, Brown place-kicker Ben Rosenblatt and Harvard defensive back Tanner Lee were second-team honorees. The senior is the eighth Cornellian to earn first-team honors and the first since Luke Siwula '07 in 2006. Hope and Siwula are joined by Joe Holland '79, Derrick Harmon '84 and Dave Van Metre '86 as multiple time Academic All-Americans. Both Holland and Harmon were two-time, first-team selections with Holland a member of the Academic All-America Hall of Fame.
An Applied Economics and Management major, Hope sports a 3.84 grade point average in one of the most rigorous business programs in the country through the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the SC Johnson College of Business.
Hope was a two-year starter and rare four-year letter winner, starting 20 games during his varsity career. The 6-3, 250-pound lineman ended his career with 112 tackles, including 13.5 for a loss and 4.5 sacks. He also forced a fumble and recovered two more. He led the team in tackles among his position group as both a sophomore and junior with 40 tackles each year, then was just as productive as a reserve his senior season with 29 stops and a pair of sacks. His leadership among a group of young defensive lineman in 2017 helped Cornell post its most sacks in a season since 2000.
