PRINCETON, N.J. — After a regular season in which it claimed the program's 13th Ivy League title, the women's hockey team also swept the Ivy League women's hockey awards as senior
Hanna Bunton was named the Ivy League Player of the year, freshman
Kristin O'Neill was tabbed as the Rookie the Year and head coach
Doug Derraugh was named the Coach of the Year, as announced Friday by the league office. Additionally, Cornell placed players on the All-Ivy teams.
Bunton finished the regular season as the Big Red's leading scorer for the second consecutive year, notching 26 points on 10 goals and 16 assists. She was second overall in the Ivy League in scoring (5-7—12) while her two game-winning goals and three power-play tallies tied for the lead. Bunton was also the 2014 Ivy League Rookie of the Year and earned Second Team All-Ivy honors as a junior.
O'Neill led all Ivy rookies in scoring with seven points on three goals and four assists. The freshman currently leads the nation with five short-handed goals and is second on the team in overall scoring with 12 goals and 12 assists.
This is the seventh time that Cornell has swept the Ivy League Player and Rookie of the Year awards, the seventh time in the past eight years that a Cornell player has taken home Player of the Year and the eighth time in 10 years that a Cornell player has won Rookie of the Year.
Derraugh earns his first Ivy League Coach of the Year honors, by unanimous decision, after leading the Big Red to a 7-0-3 record in conference play and the team's first outright Ivy League title since the 2011-12 season. Cornell was the first team to traverse the Ivy League slate without a loss since the 2009-10 season, when Derraugh led that year's Big Red team to the title with an 8-0-2 record. The Ivy League began naming a Coach of the Year during the 2014-15 season.
In addition to sweeping the major awards, Cornell was also well-represented on the All-Ivy teams. Bunton and sophomore
Micah Hart were unanimous first-team All-Ivy League honorees. O'Neill and the Big Red goaltending tandem of senior
Paula Voorheis and sophomore
Marlène Boissonnault were second-team selections. Freshman defenseman
Jaime Bourbonnais earned Honorable Mention All-Ivy honors.
Hart, who earned a spot on the honorable mention squad in 2016, put up seven points (1-6—7) in conference play – second-best among defensemen – and is currently tied for the national lead in power-play goals from blueliners with five.
Boissonnault has gone 10-1-2 this year, including a 4-0-0 mark in Ivy League contests, while leading the conference in goals against average (0.50), save percentage (.964) and posting two shutouts. Voorheis posted a 1.28 goals against average and a .958 save percentage in Ivy play – both third overall – and went 3-0-3 while earning her eighth career shutout in a 3-0 win over Harvard. It is the first All-Ivy nod for Boissonnault and the second for Voorheis, as the senior was voted Second Team All-Ivy in 2016.
Freshman
Jaime Bourbonnais, who finished tied for second in the conference in rookie scoring (1-5—6) and third overall amongst defenseman, earned Honorable Mention All-Ivy honors. The defenseman currently sits tied for fourth overall on Cornell in points (5-10—15).
Cornell's six All-Ivy selections ties with Princeton for the most in the league.
