PRINCETON, N.J. and CORTLAND, N.Y. – The women's track and field team split the squad this weekend, as the Big Red took on the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton as well as the nearby Cortland Classic.
At Princeton, the Big Red managed four event wins, five changes to the school top 10 lists, and 10 ECAC qualifiers while at Cortland the Big Red boasted three event wins and 20 top 10 event finishes.
Things got off to a great start on Friday night at Princeton with some big-time results on the track.
Sophomore
Briar Brumley moved to fourth all-time at Cornell in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a third place run of 10:13.03, one of the top 20 performances in the nation this season. And in a high profile 1500 field, junior tri-captain
Shannon Hugard set a personal best with a fine run of 4:22.11, which was the fourth best collegiate time of the night (ninth overall) and also good for sixth all-time at Cornell. Junior
Erin McLaughlin also had a good effort in the 5000, running an ECAC qualifying 16:59.32 for 10th in a strong field.
On Saturday, the Big Red picked up individual wins from its three captains as well as a rapidly improving 4x100 meter relay squad. Despite cool and very wet conditions, the 4x100 team of sophomore
Kat Quigley, senior tri-captain
Adrian Jones, freshman
Brittany Stenekes, and junior
Ellen Shepard ran a seasonal best 45.72 to win by over 1.5 seconds, a dominating performance that is also sixth all-time at Cornell. Jones and Shepard then came back with great showings in the 100, finishing 1-2 in their heat with times of 11.92 and 12.10. Jones garnered another ECAC qualifier and was the overall winner of the meet with the best time of the day, a terrific showing given the conditions. Hugard then doubled back from her 1500 the night before to win Saturday's rainy 800, pulling away steadily over the final 300 meters to win in 2:11.96. Junior tri-captain
Taysia Radoslav was the Big Red's final winner of the day, setting a seasonal best of 57.91 in the 400 hurdles despite very poor hurdling conditions, and defeated second place by a remarkable 3.5 seconds. Another big highlight came from freshman
Brittany Stenekes, who after qualifying for the 100 hurdle finals with a preliminary round run of 14.10, produced a big personal record of 13.90 to place second while also breaking the school freshman record and moving into a tie for second all-time at Cornell.
