M. Graboyes Medals at Ivy Championships; Golf Team Takes 2nd

Ivy League Championship final results

GREENWICH, Conn. — Junior Mike Graboyes earned medalist honors, and the golf team matched the program's best finish at the Ivy League Championship by taking second place at the conclusion of the three-day tournament at The Stanwich Club.

Leading from wire-to-wire, Graboyes expanded on the three-shot lead he carried into the day with an eagle on the par-5 fifth and cruised. He carded a final-round 73 for a three-day total of 2-under-par 214 and finish with a three-stroke cushion over Princeton's Alex Dombrowski and Harvard's Daniel de la Garza. With the win, Graboyes will garner 2017 All-Ivy League first team honors to go with second-team accolades from 2015 and 2016, plus he will earn an automatic individual berth into one of the regionals in the NCAA championships in May.

Graboyes not only became the second member of the Big Red to win the individual title at the league's crowning event in as many years, he's also the second within his family. His older brother, senior Luke Graboyes, was the defending champion and finished tied for 17th as Cornell's second-highest finisher in this year's event. It's only the third time since the tournament's inception in 1975 that Cornell has finished as high as second, matching efforts from 1980 and 2005.

Entering the day with just a two-stroke lead, Harvard pulled away for the team title with a score of 874 — 15 shots clear of Cornell. Princeton (891) finished third after recording the field's best round Sunday, and Yale (897) and Penn (901) rounded out the top five.

Sophomore (Jack) Tianyi Cen finished tied for 18th, carding a couple birdies on the back nine en route to a final-round 77. Junior Christopher Troy carded a 75 for a second straight day, leading the team with four birdies. Freshman Mike May was tied for 29th.

Mike Graboyes joins his older brother and Jim Bird (1986) as Cornellians to earn medalist honors at the Ivy League Championship. It's the third individual title for Graboyes in his career, with his other medalist efforts coming in a three-man playoff at Colgate's home tournament in Fall 2015 and a limited-field event hosted by Cornell in Florida in Spring 2016.

Graboyes will learn his NCAA tournament assignment on the Division I Men's Golf Selection Announcement, aired at noon on Thursay, May 4 on Golf Channel. At that point, he will be assigned to one of six regionals in Auburn, Wash.; Austin, Texas; Baton Rouge, La.; College Grove, Tenn.; Stanford, Calif. or West Lafayette, Ind. The 54-hole qualifiers for the final field will be staged from May 15-17, with finalists competing May 26-31 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
