WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Cornell head coach
Paul Beckwith earned his 300th career victory as the Big Red finished third overall at George Washington's Lindsey Ferris Invitational on Sunday afternoon at the Charles E. Smith Center. Cornell posted a 190.550 team score to hold off Penn (190.375), while finishing behind 23rd-ranked GW (195.325) and Ball State (191.775).
Beckwith, in the opening meet of his 24th season directing the Big Red program and already the school's all-time winningest coach, finished the meet with a 300-314-3 career mark. During that span, his teams have set school records on all four team events and the overall, as well as all four events and the all-around in individual competition. In fact, every athlete listed in the school's top 10 on all four events and in the all-around trained and competed under Beckwith. He became just the sixth head coach across all of Cornell's sports to secure 300 wins, joining Dick Blood (softball, 623), Ted Thoren (baseball, 541), David Eldredge (women's polo, 511 and counting; and men's polo, 462 and counting),
Mike Schafer (men's ice hockey, 426 and counting) and Andrea Dutcher (volleyball, 346).
The Big Red's top individual finisher was reigning USAG national champion and NCAA regional qualifier Kaitlin Green with a second-place finish on bars (9.825). Freshman Madison Smith was fifth with a 9.800, one of two top 10 finishes on the day in her first collegiate meet. Smith also took ninth on bars and 10th on floor (9.700).
Freshman Amy Shen was fourth on vault with a 9.825 and took fifth in the all-around (38.000) - the ninth- and 10th-highest scores in school history, respectively. Sophomore Maci Prescott tied for seventh with a 9.750 on vault.
On bars, junior Kelsy Kurfirst (9.700) led the Big Red with a fifth-place effort.
The Big Red returns to action on Sunday, January 21 at 11 a.m. when it visits Cortland for a tri-meet with the Dragons and Southern Connecticut State.
