Freshmen Lead Gymnastics To Second At Temple

ITHACA, N.Y. – A pair of freshmen had outstanding individual efforts and Cornell outlasted the field to take second of four teams at the Temple Quad Meet on Sunday afternoon. The Big Red posted a team score of 191.600 to finish behind only the host Owls (193.225) and ahead of Southeast Missouri State (189.325) and Ithaca College (188.075).

Freshmen Isabel Herczeg (beam) and Amy Shen (bars) each captured individual event titles, with Herczeg posting the fifth-highest score in school history in her event. Herczeg's 9.85 included a 9.9 on one judge's scorecard and was enough to hold off Temple's Breahna Wiczkowski (9.825) and Ithaca's Paige Landes (9.800) at the top of the leaderboard. Shen's 9.800 on bars was the highest at the meet, edging out Temple's Daisy Todd (9.775).

The Big Red posted solid efforts on beam (48.125) and floor (48.325) after counting falls on vault and bars. Cornell had gone 48.775 on bars last weekend and 48.250 on vault, but injuries and illness lowered both totals significantly over the previous week. Shen's 9.575 on vault led the team and was good for sixth overall at the meet. Madison Smith had the team's top floor score with a 9.725, good for seventh overall.

Cornell returns to Teagle Gymnasium to face Ivy rival Penn in a dual meet on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 1 p.m.
