ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell gymnastics team raced out to a strong start, but Penn rallied in the final rotation to take a 192.675-192.400 dual meet win on Saturday afternoon at Teagle Gymnasium.
The Big Red won three individual and two team events in its home opener. Amy Shen won the vault (9.850), Payton Murphy took home the bars title (9.825) and the trio of Samantha Henry, Maddison Smith and Claire Haklik each posted 9.825's on floor to sit atop the podium. Cornell had the highest team score on vault (48.075) and bars (48.450), but Penn won floor by more than a full point and beam by nearly three-quarters of a point.
In all, 11 Cornell gymnasts earned top five placements. Cornell was forced to count two falls on floor while Penn nailed its beam routines to allow the Quakers to overcome a 1.275 point deficit.
Cornell will remain at home for the Big Red Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 1 p.m. when Ithaca College, Brockport and West Chester visit Teagle Gymnasium.
