Diakomihalis, Koll Earn Top Ivy Wrestling Honors

ITHACA, N.Y. – A 16th consecutive Ivy League title is impressive in its own rights, but the Cornell wrestling team swept the conference's major awards and nine Big Red wrestlers were honored when the season-ending list was announced on Tuesday afternoon. Freshman Yianni Diakomihalis was named the Ivy League's Wrestler and Freshman of the Year, while Rob Koll took home Coach of the Year honors.

Diakomihalis was a unanimous choice for both conference awards after winning the national title at 141 pounds this past week. He was a perfect 5-0 against Ivy opponents as Cornell extended its win streak against league foes to 83 matches. Diakomihalis concluded his rookie season with a 37-1 overall record with an EIWA title to go along with his national crown. The native of Rochester, N.Y. had the hardest possible road to a national title as a No. 3 overall seed, needing to win matches over the No. 14, No. 6, No. 2 and No. 1 seeds. He defeated two-time defending NCAA Dean Heil of Oklahoma State in the quarterfinals, avenged his only defeat with a victory over Missouri's Jaydin Eierman in the semis and used a late rally to top 2017 NCAA finalist Bryce Meredith of Wyoming for the second time this year. He is the first Cornellian to earn both Wrestler and Freshman of the Year since Troy Nickerson took home both in 2006.

Koll was named Ivy League Coach of the Year for the fourth consecutive year, and for good reason. With a lineup that included five first-year starters, four of whom captured All-America accolades, the Big Red placed seventh at NCAAs, ranked 11th nationally in the final NWCA Coaches poll after a 13-2 dual meet season and finished second at EIWAs. The all-time winningest wrestling coach in program history, Koll has guided the Big Red to 16 straight Ivy League titles (19 overall), 11 EIWA crowns and eight top five NCAA team finishes, including second twice (2010, 2011). His wrestlers have won 15 national titles with 63 All-Americans and 62 individual EIWA champions.

Diakomihalis was one of five unanimous first-team picks, including four freshmen, a sophomore and a first-year junior starter. He was joined by sophomore Noah Baughman (125), Chas Tucker (133), Max Dean (184) and Ben Darmstadt (197) were also unanimous selections.

Baughman was the runner-up at the EIWA meet at 125, falling to defending national runner-up Darian Cruz of Lehigh 1-0 in the finals to conclude a 22-9 season. He is now a two-time, first-team All-Ivy selection after going 5-0 against Ivy opponents in 2018.

Tucker also was a perfect 5-0 against Ancient Eight opponents in his first season as a starter, taking second at EIWAs and earning an NCAA tournament invite. The New York State Intercollegiate champ went 23-12 overall, with eight of his losses coming to wrestlers ranked in the top 12 at his weight class.

Dean, one of three freshmen All-American, was 5-0 against Ivy competition and a perfect 15-0 in dual meet competition. With a 32-6 record, he won the Bearcat Open and New York State Intercollegiate titles and was the runner-up at the EIWA meet before taking eighth at NCAAs. It is also the fifth straight year a Dean brother has been slotted as the first-team All-Ivy pick at 184 pounds, with his older brother and current Big Red assistant coach Max Dean a four-time pick (2014-17).

Darmstadt took sixth at NCAAs to reach the podium at nationals after claiming an EIWA title. He was ranked as high as No. 1 in the country during a freshman season that concluded with a 34-4 record. Darmstadt earned wins by fall in half of his 36 matches, a Cornell freshman record. He had a 27-match win streak and reached the semifinals at NCAAs while going a perfect 5-0 in Ivy dual meets.

Making the second team was junior Will Koll. Wrestling at 149, Koll finished his season with a 9-6 record and a 4-1 mark in Ivy dual meet action. He earned the No. 2 overall seed at the EIWA championships before being forced out of the tournament with an injury.

Three Big Red grapplers took home honorable mention nods – juniors Jon Jay Chavez (165), Brandon Womack (174), Jeramy Sweany (285). Chavez concluded his season with an EIWA title and All-America honors after placing seventh at NCAAs, but only wrestled one Ivy dual, going 1-0. Womack, a 2017 All-American and EIWA champion at 165 pounds, moved up to 174 and took third at EIWAs, qualifying for his second NCAA meet. Sweany went 21-8 overall, qualifying for his second NCAA tournament in the process. He won a pair of bouts at nationals after placing third at Easterns.
