DENTON, Texas – The Cornell gymnastics team set a school record with a 195.000 to claim a spot in Saturday's USAG Collegiate Nationals team finals, taking second behind Texas Women's University on Friday evening at Kitty Magee Arena. TWU won the meet with a 195.700, while Yale (194.350) and Brown (193.825) rounded out the field.
Cornell set a team meet record on floor (49.125) and qualified three student-athletes to Sunday's individual event finals – Amy Shen (vault, all-around), Kaitlin Green (beam) and Izzy Herczeg (floor) each placed in the top five of their events.
Cornell sat tied for first after scoring a 48.775 on beam, then hit for a school record 49.125 on floor in rotation two. Its 97.900 was .6 ahead of Texas Woman's with two events to go. The home school jumped to the top of the leaderboard after the third rotation after a 49.225 on beam pushed the Pioneers to a .150 edge over the Big Red. Cornell still had more than a half-point lead over fellow Ivy schools Brown and Yale heading into bars and was never challenged in claiming the second spot for the team finals.
The Big Red, the sixth seed entering the meet, will join the host school, as well as Air Force and Lindenwood after those two schools tied for first with 194.950's in the first semifinal, in Saturday's final four.
Amy Shen took fifth on vault (9.750) to qualify for individual finals, with the top five finishers (including ties) reaching Sunday and guaranteeing themselves All-America accolades. Kelsy Kurfirst also placed in the top 10 with a seventh-place effort with a 9.725. Shen also took second in the all-around (39.100) and was a team-best seventh on bars (9.800). Christina Luniewicz finished ninth with a 9.775.
Green, the reigning USAG national champion on beam, will have a chance to defend her title after taking third with a 9.850 in the semifinals. Izzy Herczeg (third, 9.900) claimed All-America accolades on floor, with Madison Smith (sixth, 9.850) and Amy Shen (eighth, 9.825) finishing just out of a spot in the finals.
