Evdokimov, Hugard Take Home Outstanding Senior Athlete Awards

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell seniors Alex Evdokimov and Shannon Hugard took home the Charles H. Moore Outstanding Senior Varsity Athlete Award on Tuesday evening at the school's annual senior athletics banquet. Jordan Dowiak and Priyanka Shah both earned the Ronald P. Lynch Senior Spirit Award, given to student-athletes whose leadership on and off the field model the ideals of the Big Red athletics department. Jake Pulver was recognized with the Mario St. George Boiardi '04 Leadership Award for embodying leadership, athleticism and a strong work ethic.

A five-time NCAA All-American, Evdokimov graduates as one of the most decorated swimmers in school history. The school and Ivy League record-holder in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke events, he closed his career with a fourth place finish in the 100 breast and a fifth-place effort in the 200 breast at the 2018 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships to capture first-team All-America honors. He previously earned honorable mention All-America accolades in 2017 (13th in the 200, 14th in the 100) and in 2016 (15th in the 200). Evdokimov swept the 100 and 200 breast at the Ivy Championship in four consecutive seasons, becoming the first student-athlete to do so in the breaststroke and just the fourth swimmer to win four titles in more than one event. The school-record holder in the 100 and 200 breast and as part of the 400 free, 200 medley and 400 medley relays, he will graduate with pool records at Cornell, Harvard, Princeton and Brown. He was named to the Academic All-Ivy team three times. At the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials, Evdokimov placed 10th in the 100 breast and 11th in the 200.

A 2017 All-American at 1,500 meters, Hugard has been a four-year standout in both track and field and cross country. The school record holder at 1,000 meters, she ranks second all-time at Cornell at 1,500 meters and graduates with the school freshman mark in the 800. Hugard became the first middle distance runner to score individually at every Heps track meet during her career since Hall of Famer Loren Mooney '93 claimed that accomplishment. She won ECAC titles in the 1,500 in 2017 and the 1,000 in 2018, earning runner-up finishes in the 1,000 in 2017 as well. Indoors, she was the Heps champion in the 800 in 2017. A four-time All-Ivy League selection, she was named to the first team once and the second team on three occasions. As a senior, Hugard earned USTFCCCA All-Region honors after placing 19th overall. She twice qualified for NCAA Regionals in cross country and reached regional finals three times in track and field.

Dowiak led the Big Red to an Ivy League Tournament championship and a spot in the NCAA men's lacrosse quarterfinals while earning first-team All-Ivy honors as a senior. The captain had a stellar 2018 season, ranking third on the team in both goals (40) and points (47). With his four-goal performance vs. Maryland in the NCAA quarterfinals, he became just the third midfielder in Cornell history, and just the ninth in the history of the Ivy League, to register 40 goals in a single season.  A force out of the midfield, Dowiak finished the 2018 season as the sixth highest scoring midfield in the nation, and his 23-game goal scoring streak was good for fifth in the nation. He is a member of both the Red Key Senior Honor Society and the Sphinx Head Senior Honor Society and was a pivotal player in the lacrosse team's many service projects.

A two-year captain, Shah led the 2017 team to the program's first-ever Ivy League championship. She became the first women's tennis player in program history to earn first-team All-Ivy honors in both singles and doubles in the same season in 2018. Shah was a two-time Captains' Award winner, the team's Iron Woman Award winner in 2017 and its Most Improved Player in 2016. With a career record of 47-27 in singles and 48-26 in doubles, Shah was named the ITA's Most Improved Senior for the Northeast Region. Under her leadership, the Big Red was also presented the ITA's community service award for the region.

Pulver is a two-time team captain that led men's lacrosse to an Ivy League Tournament championship and a spot in the NCAA Men's Lacrosse quarterfinals in 2018. He has been named a finalist for both the Senior CLASS Award and the YRL Unsung Hero Award because of his extraordinary character. Despite a diagnosis of ulcerative colitis as a freshman in high school, Pulver persevered and made his childhood dream of playing lacrosse at Cornell a reality.  On the field, Pulver is a three-time All-Ivy defender, including a unanimous first-team selection in 2018. A four-year starter, he helped the Big Red to an Ivy championship in 2015 and has been the anchor of one of the best defenses in the conference during his four seasons. Off the field, Pulver's commitment to community service is unmatched. He is involved in numerous community service projects around campus through the Big Red men's lacrosse team, the Sphinx Head Honor Society, and Red Key Honor Society, typically taking a leadership role. For the past three years, Pulver has helped coordinate the team's 21 Run, the Clinic for a Cause, Big Red Readers and the team's participation in the Ithaca Kids Book Fest. He has been an event speaker for the Chrons and Colitis Foundation, encouraging others to continue following their dreams despite their diagnosis. This past summer, Pulver worked as a researcher with Dr. Prateek Wali and other inflammatory bowel disease doctors with the completion of a study investigating the presence of a specific protein and its correlation to the severity of symptoms in IBD patients.
