Milliman Promoted To Richard M. Moran Head Coach of Men’s Lacrosse

ITHACA, N.Y. – Andy Noel, the Meakem*Smith Director of Athletics and Physical Education, has announced that Peter Milliman has been promoted to the position of Richard M. Moran Head Coach of Men's Lacrosse at Cornell University. Milliman, who led the Big Red on an interim basis during the 2018 season, becomes the 12th head coach in the programs' 126-year history.

"Unquestionably, Peter Milliman's leadership and his coaching performance, leaves no doubt that he has earned my trust to coach the Big Red in the years ahead." said Noel. "He's earned it every step of the way, beginning with the outstanding job he's done with recruiting over the past few years, and continuing through this season with the terrific job he and his staff have done coaching the team on the field, and re-establishing the Cornell Lacrosse culture. Coach Milliman and I have had numerous conversations and it's become clear to me that he has established a long-term plan for the program to be successful, and I have no doubt he's going to do just that."

"I want to thank Andy Noel, [Senior Associate Director of Athletics] Jeff Hall, and the entire Cornell lacrosse family for giving me the opportunity to be a part of such an amazing program," said Milliman. "I've been fortunate to be at Cornell for the past few years and I've developed an appreciation for how special this place is. I'm honored to have the chance to continue to lead this team as the Richard M. Moran Head Coach of lacrosse. I'm looking forward to building upon the successes of the 2018 season as we intend to compete for conference and national championships year in and year out."

Milliman's 2018 squad exceeded all expectations, evidenced by the team's appearance in the NCAA quarterfinals, where it fell to defending national champion Maryland. After back-to-back losing seasons in 2016 and 2017, the Big Red started the 2018 season well outside the top 20 and were picked to finish fifth in the Ivy League. Under Milliman's direction Cornell continually improved, returning to the USILA Coaches' Poll on March 26 (No. 14) ending a 29-week unranked drought, the longest stretch in school history. The team went on to finish second in the conference with a mark of 4-2 before winning the program's first Ivy League Tournament title since the 2011 campaign.

Cornell finished the year with an overall record of 13-5, posting eight more wins than it did a season ago (5), matching the best single-season turnaround in program history. The Big Red finished the season ranked in the top five in nation in goals, assists, points, scoring margin, and shooting percentage.

Prior to his stint as interim head coach, Milliman served the program first as an assistant coach and then as the program's Mario St. George Boiardi '04 Associate Head Coach of Men's Lacrosse. During that time, he acted as the team's recruiting coordinator while assisting in all facets of coaching and program management. During the 2017 campaign, Milliman took over as the team's offensive coordinator and the Big Red finished the regular season ranked in the top 20 in the nation in goals (16th – 11.69), assists (11th – 7.77) and points (12th – 19.46).

Milliman helped the 2014 and 2015 Big Red squads to a share of the Ivy League title, a pair of Ivy League Tournament appearances and two berths to the NCAA Tournament.

Prior to his time at Cornell, Milliman spent one season as a member of the Princeton coaching staff, despite being promoted to the team's offensive coordinator position just prior to his departure. As the assistant defensive coordinator in 2013, he helped the Tigers to a 9-6 record overall and a mark of 4-2 in the Ivy League.

A native of Rochester, N.Y., Milliman spent four seasons as the head coach at Division II Pfeiffer, where he amassed a record of 37-26 as his teams improved the squad's win total each year. During his tenure with the Falcons, he was twice named the Conference Carolinas Coach of the Year.

Before taking over at Pfeiffer, Milliman spent two years as an assistant coach at the Rochester Institute of Technology, with a one-year stint as an assistant at Siena. In his time as an assistant coach, the Tigers and Saints went a combined 36-16 overall and 21-5 in their respective conferences.

Milliman was a three-time Division III All-America at Gettysburg, where he helped the Bullets to two NCAA Division III championship games. He was a three-time All-Centennial Conference pick and was selected to participate in the annual USILA North-South All-Star Game.

Following his time at Gettysburg, Milliman went on to play professionally for four years with Major League Lacrosse's Rochester Rattlers, winning an MLL Championship in 2008.

Milliman and his wife, head coach of the Wells' women's lacrosse team, Megan (Foy) Milliman, reside in Ithaca with their newborn daughter, Reese.
