Biography

Junior Season - 2010
Schmeltzer saw extensive time in the lineup for the Big Red as a designated hitter and at first base, batting .242 on the season with nine runs scored and 14 driven in and three home runs. He also saw time on the mound, making five appearances, all starts, and went 0-4 with an 11.65 earned-run average. At the plate, he had a pair of multi-hit games, going 2-for-2 with a run and three RBI against Siena on April 20, and going 2-for-3 with a run and one RBI against Ithaca on May 6. Schmeltzer drove in a pair of runs on March 31 at LeMoyne, slamming his first home run of the season. He later belted on at Penn on April 18 and again on April 25 against Columbia. He struggled in his five appearances on the mound, twice allowing eight earned runs in a game and three times allowing a pair He struck out 10 batters on the season, with five of those coming in his season opener at Florida Atlantic on March 23, working five innings and allowing eight runs.

Sophomore Season - 2009
Schmeltzer proved to be a double-sided threat for the Big Red as a sophomore, both offensively and on the mound. At the plate, he posted a .220 batting average but clubbed five home runs and drove in 14 while scoring 11 time. Schmeltzer had four multi-hit games on the season, and drove in a pair of runs in a 1-for-4 performance on March 31 against Yale. On the mound, he finished with a 2-3 record and a 4.01 earned run average in nine appearances, seven of those starts. He struck out 42 on the season, one behind Corey Pappel's team-high 43, while issuing 23 walks. Schmeltzer made his first appearance out of the bullpen, working 2.1 innings of scoreless relief on March 14 at Santa Clara. He posted a season-high eight strikeouts three times, including on March 19 at Sacramento State in his first start of the year. He then duplicated that on April 11 against Penn in his first victory of the year and again on May 2 at Dartmouth in game one of the Ivy League Championship Series. Schmeltzer also worked a perfect inning against Princeton on April 29, striking out two to help the Big Red tie the single-game strikeout record of 18 against the Tigers to advance to the league championship. After the year, Schmelzter played summer league ball in Hawaii, being voted as that league's ninth-best prospect by the league's coaches.

Freshman Season - 2008

Schmeltzer appeared in 27 games as a freshman, starting 19 times, with six of those coming at first base and 13 at designated hitter. He went 4-for-6 with a run and five RBI against NJIT on March 21, then went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and another three driven in on April 3 against LeMoyne. In that contest against the Dolphins, Schmeltzer smacked a pair of doubles and hit his first career home run, while also being walked once. He also made four appearances on the mound, starting the April 22 contest against Siena. Against the Saints, he worked three innings, allowing just two hits and a run while striking out three batters.

Before Cornell
Schmeltzer was a PUMA pre-season All-American in both 2006 and 2007 in baseball, while Baseball America had him as the 133rd-ranked player in the Class of 2007. Perfect Game Northeast, meanwhile, had him tabbed as the 52nd-ranked player as a pitcher and first-baseman. He competed at the Team One East showcase as one of the top players in the northeast in 2007. In 2001, he won the national home run derby at the AAU championships and was the national runner-up the following year. A standout in football as well at tight end, he caught eight passes for 151 yards and posted 15 tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery as a senior. He was a two-time all-league pick and an honorable mention all-county selection in football.

Personal
Jadd Aharon Schmeltzer is the son of Dr. Betty A. Rosa and David Schmeltzer and has an older brother. His father won a national title in the javelin in his age group at the City College of New York. He is enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
