At Cornell
Peter Milliman was promoted to the position of Richard M. Moran Head Coach of Men's Lacrosse in May 2018 after spending one season as the interim head coach.

In his first season as the Richard M. Moran Head Coach, the Big Red posted a 10-5 record overall despite facing one of the toughest schedules in the nation. Four of Cornell’s five losses came against teams that finished the regular season ranked in the top three of the USILA Coaches’ Poll, while one of its wins came over No. 1 Towson on March 10, giving Cornell victories over the No. 1 team in the nation in back-to-back seasons.

The Big Red’s offense was one of the most dangerous in the nation, as Cornell finished in the top 10 in goals, assists and points.

Following the season, Cornell had 10 players named All-Ivy, including first-team selections Jeff Teat, Brandon Salvatore and Ryan Bray. Both Teat and Salvatore were unanimously voted onto the first-team and went on to be named All-Americans.

Milliman’s 2018 squad exceeded all expectations, evidenced by the team’s appearance in the NCAA quarterfinals, where it fell to defending national champion Maryland. After back-to-back losing seasons in 2016 and 2017, the Big Red started the 2018 season well outside the top 20 and were picked to finish fifth in the Ivy League. Under Milliman’s direction Cornell continually improved, returning to the USILA Coaches’ Poll on March 26 (No. 14) ending a 29-week unranked drought, the longest stretch in school history. The team went on to finish second in the conference with a mark of 4-2 before winning the program’s first Ivy League Tournament title since the 2011 campaign.

Cornell finished the year with an overall record of 13-5, posting eight more wins than it did a season ago (5), matching the best single-season turnaround in program history. The Big Red finished the season ranked in the top five in nation in goals, assists, points, scoring margin, and shooting percentage.

In his first four seasons at Cornell, Milliman served the program first as an assistant coach and then as the program’s Mario St. George Boiardi '04 Associate Head Coach of Men's Lacrosse. During that time, he acted as the team’s recruiting coordinator while assisting in all facets of coaching and program management. This past season, Milliman took over as the team’s offensive coordinator and the Big Red finished the regular season ranked in the top 20 in the nation in goals (16th – 11.69), assists (11th – 7.77) and points (12th – 19.46).

Recently named to the coaching staff for the 2019 U.S. men’s national indoor team as an assistant coach, Milliman has previous international coaching experience as the head coach of the Russian national team as it made its debut at the 2014 FIL World Championship in Denver.

In his final campaign as the team’s defensive coordinator (2016), the Big Red’s defensive unit held more than half of its opponents (7) to single digit goals. His man-down defense finished the season ranked sixth in the nation (.722), allowing just 10 man-up goals on the season. Cornell also held its Ivy League opponents to nearly 10 fewer shots per game than their season average (36.3 spg), while the team posted the third best goals-against average in the conference (10.2).

Milliman helped the 2014 and 2015 Big Red squads to a share of the Ivy League title, a pair of Ivy League Tournament appearances and two berths to the NCAA Tournament.

Prior to Cornell
Milliman came to Cornell after one season as a member of the Princeton coaching staff, despite being promoted to the team’s offensive coordinator position just prior to his departure. As the assistant defensive coordinator in 2013, he helped the Tigers to a 9-6 record overall and a mark of 4-2 in the Ivy League.

A native of Rochester, N.Y., Milliman spent four seasons as the head coach at Division II Pfeiffer, where he amassed a record of 37-26 as his teams improved the squad’s win total each year. During his tenure with the Falcons, he was twice named the Conference Carolinas Coach of the Year.

In his final season at Pfeiffer, Milliman led the team to a program-record 12 wins, as the Falcons reached the Conference Carolinas championship game for the second consecutive year, losing to national runner up Limestone 9-5. That season, Pfeiffer reached as high as 10th in the USILA Coaches’ Poll.

Under Milliman the Falcons finished in the top five in DII in goals-against average, man-down defense and scoring margin in each of his final two seasons and led the nation in save percentage in 2011 (.657). He also coached 13 players who combined to earn 21 all-conference selections, including a program record nine in 2012. He also coached two Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Year selections, as well as the program’s first All-American in a decade.

Before taking over at Pfeiffer, Milliman spent two years as an assistant coach at the Rochester Institute of Technology, with a one-year stint as an assistant at Siena. In his time as an assistant coach, the Tigers and Saints went a combined 36-16 overall and 21-5 in their respective conferences.

Playing Career
Milliman was a three-time Division III All-America at Gettysburg, where he helped the Bullets to two NCAA Division III championship games. He was a three-time All-Centennial Conference pick and was selected to participate in the annual USILA North-South All-Star Game.

Following his time at Gettysburg, Milliman went on to play professionally for four years with Major League Lacrosse’s Rochester Rattlers, winning an MLL Championship in 2008.
