At Cornell
Trudy Vande Berg was named to the Big Red coaching staff before the 2012 season and elevated to the position of the Wendy Schaenen '79 Head Coach of Volleyball in March 2015.
In her 11 seasons at the helm, Vande Berg has shaped the Big Red into a program that consistently competes among the Ivy League's top teams, including third-place conference finishes in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2024. Cornell's three straight third-place Ivy League finishes from 2017-19 marked the program's best stretch since winning three conference titles and finishing second from 2003-06. The Big Red enjoyed a breakout campaign in 2019, posting a 17-6 overall record and an 8-4 mark in Ivy League play for its best season since 2006.
The Big Red have continued their upward trajectory in recent seasons. In 2024, Cornell finished 14-10 overall and 8-6 in Ivy League play, earning the program's first appearance in the Ivy League Tournament since the conference introduced the four-team postseason format in 2022. The team also earned Ivy League Coaching Staff of the Year honors, while Mackenzie Parsons was named Ivy League Rookie of the Year and joined Eliza Konvicka as a First Team All-Ivy selection. Doga Ozalp earned All-Ivy Honorable Mention recognition.
Cornell followed that success with an even stronger 2025 campaign, posting a 15-10 overall record and returning to the Ivy League Tournament for a second consecutive season. The Big Red secured one of the signature victories of the year with a road win over Princeton, which entered the match undefeated in Ivy League play. The victory highlighted Cornell's ability to compete with the conference's elite and further solidified the program's position among the league's top contenders.
Vande Berg led the Big Red to a 12-11 (8-6) record in 2017 and helped the team improve to 13-10 (9-5) in 2018. Cornell's nine conference wins in 2018 were the most since the 2008 squad also snagged nine. The accomplishments of the 2017 season, which included Vande Berg being named the Ivy League Coach of the Year, came on the heels of a 2016 campaign in which the Big Red finished the year at 12-12 overall. The team posted six more victories than the previous year (6-18), marking the best single-season turnaround since the 2003 team went 21-4 following a 14-12 performance in 2002.
Vande Berg laid the groundwork for the team's turnaround in 2016 with her 2015 recruiting class, which was among the top 90 in the nation and earned a high honorable mention distinction from PrepVolleyball.com. One of the youngest teams in the country in 2015, Cornell was very competitive, losing 13 of its 41 sets by just two points.
Since taking over in 2015, Cornell has garnered 26 All-Ivy selections, including five First Team All-Ivy selections. Under Vande Berg's guidance, the Big Red have produced an Ivy League Rookie of the Year, multiple all-region selections and numerous academic award recipients. In 2018, Zoe Chamness '21 became the first Cornell player since Hilary Holland '08 to earn Google Cloud Academic All-District Volleyball First Team honors.
Following Cornell's return to the Ivy League Tournament in 2024, Parsons became the program's first Ivy League Rookie of the Year since 2007 and earned AVCA North Region Honorable Mention accolades, becoming the first Cornell player in nearly two decades to receive all-region recognition. Konvicka also earned a spot on the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division I Women's Volleyball All-ECAC First Team.
The Big Red continued their individual success in 2025, placing four student-athletes on the All-Ivy teams. Konvicka earned First Team All-Ivy honors for the second consecutive season, while Parsons and Sara Pomar were named to the Second Team and Nicole Mallus garnered Third Team recognition. The quartet helped lead Cornell to its second straight Ivy League Tournament appearance and a 15-win season.
In her three seasons as an assistant, Vande Berg's strong recruiting helped establish a solid foundation for the program's success. She was instrumental in securing setter Alyssa Phelps '17 and middle blocker Macy Wilson '17, both of whom concluded their careers as All-Ivy selections.
