WEST POINT, N.Y - The Cornell University sprint football team defeated Army 26-7 on Friday night to finish the season a perfect 6-0 for the first time since 1982. This is only the third time that the Big Red has been undefeated in sprint football history. The only other perfect seasons were in 1978 and 1982. The victory also earned Cornell the title of CSFL champions for only the sixth time in league history.

The Big Red got on the board first with a 37 yard field goal by senior Jason Zittel. Six minutes later, Zittel recovered a fumble and returned the ball 25 yards for a touchdown to put Cornell up 10-0. The second quarter was uneventful until the very end when Zittel kicked a 36 yard field goal to send the Big Red into the locker room up 13-0 at the half.

The second half started slowly, but senior running back and captain Michael Fullowan ran a short four yards into the end zone with 44 seconds left in the third quarter to make the score 20-0. Halfway through the fourth quarter, sophomore quarterback Zak Dentes threw a 61 yard pass and connected with sophomore receiver Michael Brennan for the touchdown.

The game was less than two minutes away from being a shutout when Army's Stephen Lewis ran 18 yards for the Black Knights' first touchdown at 1:25 in the fourth quarter.

Dentes led the Big Red offense by accumulating 46 yards on 13 carries and completed 10 passes on 23 attempts for a total of 156 yards and one touchdown. Fullowan added to the offensive effort with 34 yards on 17 carries and one touchdown. Brennan also had a touchdown, and four receptions for a total of 108 yards.

The Cornell defense was led by Zittel who had seven tackles, one sack and two fumble recoveries. Sophomore defensive end Jim Gonos had thirteen tackles, one sack and one fumble recovery.
