ITHACA,NY -- The Cornell women's squash team started off its day losing to Harvard, 9-0 Saturday morning. However, the Big Red turned the day around picking up a 5-4 victory against Stanford later that afternoon.
The win against Stanford broke a three game losing streak for the Big Red. For such a tightly contested affair, the individual matchups presented only two non-straight set wins. Stanford took the first two slots in straight sets, but Cornell was victorious in the third through seventh slots. Mairin Barnes lost only three points to Ashleigh Pattee of Stanford on her way to a straight set win out of the fourth slot. Alix Watson and Jen Chu were not too far behind. Watson only lost seven points against Stanford's Karissa Hazy on her way to her own straight sets victory, while Chu took down Stanford's Esther Cheng, dropping only eight points in the process of winning in straight sets. Although the Big Red lost in the eighth, ninth, and tenth slots, the middle slots wins were enough to power the team past Stanford.
Cornell's victory allowed them to bounce back from a loss earlier that afternoon against Harvard. The Big Red was not able to take a game from the Crimson, loosing in straight sets out of all ten slots. Five of the ten slots featured games where the Big Red competitor did not win a point against their Harvard opponent. Rachel Wagner played the tightest match against Harvard's Supriya Balsekar in the third slot, After dropping the first game 9-3, she played tough the second time around, but lost 9-7. In the third game Wagner came even closer, but still could not get over the hump, losing 10-8 and finishing off Balsekar's straight set win. Barnes in the fourth slot, and Alex Cornett in the second slot each won ten points over the three games, but still lost in straight sets.
