STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Drew Cost's left-footed rocket from 20 yards out with 1:52 remaining in the second overtime period gave Penn State a 2-1 victory over Cornell in men's soccer action on Tuesday night at Jeffrey Field in State College, Pa.
The Nittany Lions struck first in the eighth minute as Jacobo Vera scored his fourth goal of the season, slipping a shot past Cornell goalkeeper
Luca Cerretani. Penn State would take the lead into the break and through the first 20 minutes of the second half.
In the 65th minute, Cornell's
Kevin Vieira scored his first marker of the year after taking a long pass from
Dan McKallagat. McKallagat's cross across the field found Vieira 15 yards from goal on the right post. After settling the ball, Vieira flicked a shot at the goal that was deflected by a defender and up over the head of Penn State goalkeeper Conrad Taylor and into the far side netting, knotting the score at one.
Cornell had several chances to go ahead late in the second half, as
Dana Flanders had a shot from eight yards out with Taylor out of the net, but his attempt at the goal went over the cross bar. Later, Flanders got Taylor isolated on the left post and slipped a shot underneath the goalkeeper, only to have the ball cleared out of danger by a Penn State defender.
Cerretani made one stop in the first overtime to keep the Big Red even, and had another Penn State shot carom off the post and trickle in front of the goal, only to be cleared away by the Big Red defense.
Penn State improves to 5-7-3 on the year with the win, while Cornell drops to 5-6-1. Cerretani made a season-best 10 saves in the losing effort, while Taylor picked up a single save in the win for Penn State.
Cornell returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Princeton for a 4 p.m. contest against the Tigers.
