ITHACA, N.Y. -- Despite six saves from freshman goalkeeper Jodi Palmer, the Cornell women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 contest to Harvard on Saturday afternoon at Berman Field. The loss sends the Big Red to 4-7 on the season and 0-2 in the Ivy League, while Harvard improves to 7-3-1 overall and 1-1 in the Ancient Eight.
Palmer made three saves in the first 45 minutes as the two teams battled through a scoreless first half, but Harvard cracked into the scoring column in the 59th minute. Kerry Kartsonis played a ball into the Cornell penalty area to Gina Wideroff, who fired a shot off the fingertips of Palmer and into the back of the net to the freshman goalkeeper's left.
Cornell had a chance to find the equalizer when freshman Samantha Weiner sprung classmate Lena Russomagno on a 40-yard run into the Harvard penalty area. Just as Russomagno was about to take a shot one-on-one against Harvard goalkeeper Lauren Mann, Russomagno was tripped up from behind, with no foul call from the referee, much to the dismay of the Cornell bench. Cornell kept pressing, searching for the tying goal, but Mann kept the Big Red off the scoreboard as time expired.
Palmer made six saves, one off her career high, in taking the loss for the Big Red. Mann made four stops in getting the win for the Crimson.
Cornell returns to action next Saturday, October 13, when the Big Red heads to Yale for a 4 p.m. contest in New Haven, Conn.
