PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The Cornell women's soccer team opened Ivy League play on Friday night at Penn, hoping to reverse the misfortune that had followed the squad on the road through the non-conference slate. Unfortunately, an own-goal in the ninth minute would be the only scoring of the game as the Big Red fell, 1-0, to fall to 4-5 on the season.

Cornell, which is now 0-5 on the road this season, surrendered the game's only goal when a headed ball went over the head of goalkeeper Jodi Palmer and into the back of the Cornell goal. The goal helped Penn improve to 6-2-1 overall and 1-0 in Ivy League play.

The game, which featured the top three point-scorers in the Ivy League (Cornell's Lena Russomagno and Penn's Jessica Fuccello and Jess Rothenheber), was surprisingly without a great deal of offense. Cornell was credited with just one shot in the contest, while the Quakers were credited with 11, though they could not solve Palmer on their own. Palmer wound up with five saves in the contest, while Penn goalkeeper Cailly Carroll made one save in the contest.

Cornell will try to even its record again when it puts its unblemished home record on the line on Sunday. The Big Red plays host to central New York rival Colgate in a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday at Berman Field in Ithaca, the final non-conference contest of the season.
