PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A pair of first-half goals from junior
Eva Dixon and freshman
Abageal Vonderweidt staked the Cornell women's soccer team to a 2-0 lead, and freshman netminder
Kelly Murphy made that hold up with her first collegiate shutout as the Big Red knocked off Brown, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon in Providence, R.I.
Snapping an 11-game winless streak, the Big Red also picked up the first Ivy League victory in the coaching career of head coach Danielle LaRoche. The win was also the first true road win for the Big Red under LaRoche's direction, with the win earlier this season over Oakland (Mich.) coming at a neutral site in Rochester, N.Y. Cornell improves to 2-10-1 on the year and is now 1-4 in the Ivy League.
Dixon put the Big Red ahead in the ninth minute, firing a shot from about 20 yards out on the left side of the penalty area that beat Brown goalkeeper Brenna Hogue. Three minutes later, it was Vonderweidt's turn with her first collegiate goal, taking a pass from
Lena Russomagno and slipping her shot past Hogue to make the score 2-0 with 78 minutes to go in the match.
From there, it was all Murphy, as the freshman was solid in goal in securing her first career shutout. Murphy made five stops in the first half, then added another eight in the second, to finish with a career-high 13 saves for the match.
Hogue finished the match with five saves for the Bears, who fall to 5-6-4 overall and 1-3-1 in Ivy League play. Brown out-shot the Big Red, 29-18, but ultimately, it was the finishing of the Big Red that made the difference.
Cornell returns home for its final two games of the season, taking on Princeton on Nov. 1 at 7 p.m., the second game of a doubleheader with the Cornell men.
