Northern Iowa Plays Past Volleyball at Kansas State Tournament

MANHATTAN, Kan.—
The Big Red volleyball team wrapped up play with a 3-0 loss to Northern Iowa at the Varney's Kansas State Invitational on Saturday night. Cornell was led by sophomore Erin McCarthy with 11 kills. Northern Iowa improved to 9-1 this season, while the Big Red moves to 0-3. For her play during the weekend, junior Libero Megan Mushovic was named to the all-tournament team.

The first set opened with the two teams battling back and forth for points. The Big Red and the Panthers were tied at 20, but UNI pulled ahead and won the match 25-21 with Shannon Aschoff making the two final kills. Northern Iowa came out fast in set two to take a 10-5 early lead and continued strong play to a 25-12 win. Cornell came out to a 6-0 lead in set three, but the Panthers came back to tie the match at 11. The teams battled back and forth for points at the end, but UNI edged out the Big Red to a 25-23 win.

Along with her 11 kills, McCarthy also had eight digs for the Big Red. Senior captain Hilary Holland tallied 22 assists and six digs for Cornell. Junior libero Megan Mushovic led the Big Red defense with 21 digs.

The Panthers were led by Aschoff who totaled 17 kills, while hitting .406. Ashten Stelken hit .462 while notching 13 kills. Ellie Blankenship notched a match-high 24 digs for Northern Iowa.

Cornell will return to action next weekend when it will play at the UConn Toyota Classic. The Big Red will open the tournament on Friday night, playing Connecticut at 7:30 p.m. Cornell will play Temple and Maine on Saturday.
