Sprint Football Upends Mansfield, 35-0

MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Cornell University sprint football team welcomed CSFL newcomer Mansfield to the league this afternoon by defeating the Mountaineers, 35-0, in front of 3,100 fans at Karl Van Norman Field. The Big Red defense dominated the game, limiting Mansfield to just 14 yards of total offense, thanks to a run defense that held the Mountaineers to -58 yards rushing.
 
Offensively, Cornell was led by the quarterback tandem of Zac Dentes and Elliot Corey. Dentes completed 7-of-9 passes for 74 yards with one touchdown, while Corey connected on 5-of-8 passes for 105 yards. Both signal callers also rushed for touchdowns.
 
Mike Brennan was the favorite target on the day with five catches for 61 yards, including a 33-yard reception, while Upal Sarker caught just two passes, and had a long of 52 for a total of 57 yards on the day. Chris Latimer made four catches for 28 yards, while Josh Friedman caught three passes for 53 yards and snatched a 25-yard touchdown pass from Dentes.
 
On the ground, DJ Schiavetta and Timothy Bruhn both gained 50 yards, with Schiavetta carrying a game-high 11 times and scoring a touchdown. Ryan Smith also had a solid day, rushing for 47 yards and crossing the goal line once.
 
Defensively, Nicho Indovina posted eight tackles, including two for a loss of six yards, while Matt Ferrari had four tackles, including one tackle for a loss and a sack, as well as a forced fumble. Daniel Kubis also had two tackles and an interception.     
 
Cornell (1-1) is back in action next weekend as it opens CSFL league play against Navy on Saturday, Oct. 4 in the Allegiance Bowl in Saratoga, N.Y. Game time is slated for noon.
