HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Cornell scored a pair of first-half goals off of corner kicks, but Colgate rallied for an equalizer in the second half and the game-winner with 20 seconds remaining in the contest to knock off the Big Red in a non-conference women's soccer contest on Sunday afternoon in Hamilton, N.Y.
Kala Neilson and
Cristina Law both scored for the Big Red, while
Lena Russomagno tallied a pair of assists on the match.
Cornell (1-6-1) wasted no time getting on the board, capitalizing on the first corner kick of the match in the fifth minute as Russomagno's ball from the corner found the head of Neilson, whose perfectly struck header went past Colgate goalkeeper Rebecca Michlin.
The Raiders (3-6-1) tied the score in the eighth minute as a deflected cross bounced across the goal area and to an oncoming Anna Baldwin, who touched the ball into the open net.
The Big Red took the lead again in the 21st minute, again capitalizing on a corner kick as this time it was Law on the receiving end of Russomagno's ball, with her header deflecting off a Colgate defender's head and into the side netting for the 2-1 lead.
Freshman goalkeeper
Megan Bartlett came on in relief for starter
Kelly Murphy at the half and was called upon to make a huge save just five minutes into the half, stopping a header off a corner kick from point-blank range. Still, the Raiders got the equalizer at the 55th minute as Jessica Bitsack scored on a breakaway, placing the ball down in the corner at Bartlett's left post.
Colgate got the victory with 20 seconds to play in the second overtime session as Jillian Arnault collected a loose ball 20 yards out from goal and fired a rocket past the diving attempt of Bartlett and into the upper left corner of the goal.
Cornell played the final 20 minutes of regulation and the two overtime sessions with just 10 players as
Katie Hayes was sent off for a foul in the Big Red's defensive third.
Bartlett made eight saves in taking the loss in just 64:40 of action, while Murphy made three stops in the first half. Colgate goalkeeper Michlin made seven stops for the victory.
The Big Red returns to action on Saturday, playing host to Penn in a 7 p.m. contest at Berman Field as the second game of a doubleheader with the Cornell men.
