ITHACA, N.Y. -- Goals from
Jimmy Lannon,
J.J. Bain and
Chase Aaronson propelled the Cornell men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Central New York rival Colgate on a brisk Tuesday night at Berman Field. The win lifts the Big Red to 5-3-3 on the year, while Colgate falls to 5-6-1 on the season.
Lannon got the Big Red on the scoreboard first, as he finished off a loose ball in the Colgate penalty area with a shot that found its way through traffic and past Raider goalkeeper Colin Prather in the 12th minute. The Big Red would carry that lead into the half after out-shooting the Raiders, 8-4 for the first 45 minutes.
Colgate came out fired up to start the second half, but the Big Red defense held firm, enabling the offense to tack on a second goal in the 58th minute.
Scott Caldwell played a ball across the Colgate penalty area that found a wide-open Bain on the back post, and the senior banged the ball home for what would be the eventual game-winner.
Colgate responded three minutes later with its goal, as Will Zabel played the ball into the corner, where it was crossed by Shane Conlin. Conlin's ball found its way through a crowd and into the path of the oncoming Chris Ross, who finished the near-post cross with a low strike.
With the lead cut in half, the Big Red tacked on an insurance goal in the 72nd minute as
Matt Bouraee played a short pass to Aaronson 25 yards from goal. Aaronson took a dribble and ripped a low shot that skipped through the hands of Prather and ducked inside the near post for the sophomore's team-leading third goal of the season.
Cornell goalkeeper
Scott Brody picked up five saves in taking the win, while Prather stopped a pair of shots in taking the loss.
Cornell returns to action on Saturday, traveling to New Haven, Conn., for a 7 p.m. matchup against Yale.
