PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- A goal in the 62nd minute proved to be the difference as the Cornell women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 contest to Penn on Friday night in Philadelphia, Pa. Junior Lena Russomagno scored the goal for the Big Red on a penalty kick in the first half for her first goal of the season.

Russomagno's goal came in the ninth minute as the Big Red drew a penalty kick early in the match. The junior converted the goal for her first goal of the season and the ninth of her career. Penn equalized the score in the 34th minute on a penalty kick of its own, with Michelle Drugan converting the kick from the spot past Cornell goalkeeper Kelly Murphy.

The score remained tied at one for the remainder of the first half and into the second. Penn finally got the go-ahead goal in the 62nd minute, converting off a corner kick. Drugan crossed the ball from the left side and found the head of Marin McDermott, who just got the ball across the line before the clearing attempt.

Cornell (1-8-1, 0-2 Ivy League) out-shot the Quakers (5-2-2, 1-1 Ivy) on the night, 12-10, including a 9-6 margin in the second half. Cornell goalkeeper Kelly Murphy stopped three shots in the loss, while Penn netminder Caroline Williams stopped four shots in the win.

Cornell returns to action on Oct. 10, playing host to Harvard in a 4:30 p.m. contest at Berman Hall.
