ITHACA, N.Y. - The Big Red field hockey team got back to its winning ways this afternoon, as it defeated Brown, 7-3, at Marsha Dodson Field. With the win, Cornell improves to 9-3 overall and 3-2 in the Ivy League.
The Big Red was led with a career day from
Catie De Stio who scored two goals and three assists to match a career-high seven points, while
Kelley Kantarian chipped in two goals. Also scoring for Cornell was
Katie Kirnan,
Olivia Boyd and
Kate Thompson.
Making her first career Ivy League start, sophomore goalie
Alex Botte made eight saves to earn the victory.
Cornell outshot the Bears, 29-13, and doubled-up the visitors on penalty corners, 12-6.
Brown's Leslie Springmeyer had a hand in all three of the Bears' goals, scoring two and assisting on Katie Hyland's tally. In goal, Caroline Washburn made 12 saves to keep Brown in the contest.
The Big Red got on the board first when Thompson converted a penalty corner to make it a 1-0 game at the 14:26 mark. De Stio and
Natalie Appleton were credited with the assist
Brown tied the game just over three minutes later when Tacy Zysk carried the ball into the circle and found herself one-on-one with Botte. As the sophomore goalkeeper came off her line to play the ball, Zysk slipped it to Springmeyer, who directed it into the goal.
With time running down in the first half, the home team regained the lead, as De Stio sent a perfect pass upfield to Kantarian. After a redirection move, Kantarian lost her defender and managed to get an unabated shot at the goal. The ball hit a Brown player and bounced into the net, making it a 2-1 game with just under six minutes to play in the opening half.
The Big Red extended its lead early in the second half, scoring three goals in a span of just over 10 minutes after the teams returned to the field. The first goal came off a penalty corner, as a shot by
Mattie Prodanovic was redirected into the goal by Kirnan at the 43:50 mark.
Just under two minutes later, De Stio made it a 4-1 game as she sprinted past the Brown defense and carried the ball to the left endline before ripping a reverse-stick shot back into the right hand corner of the goal.
De Stio had a hand in the next goal as well as she collected the ball off a rebounded save and slipped it to Boyd, who curled around a Bear defender and beat Washburn to the far post, pushing the score to 5-1 at 45:20.
Brown responded just over one minute later, scoring on a penalty corner by Hyland.
The Big Red returned its lead to four goals when Kirnan sent a long pass behind the Brown defense and hit De Stio in stride, who converted to make it a 6-2 game with just over 12 minutes to play.
The Bears scored again when Kit Masini collected a loose ball in front of the Cornell goal and slipped it to Springmeyer, who one-timed it into the net to bring the visitors within three, 6-3.
With time winding down in the game, the Big Red tallied one final goal to put the punctuation on the victory, as Kantarian scored off a pass from De Stio at the 68:04 mark.
Cornell is back in action tomorrow as it welcomes Bucknell to Marsha Dodson Field on Sunday, Oct. 25, at 1 p.m. Prior to the game, the Big Red field hockey program will honor its four seniors –
Natalie Appleton, Mel Jue,
Kelley Kantarian and
Katie Kirnan – as they play in their final home contest.
