NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Boston University scored a pair of goals in the third period to erase a 3-1 lead and force a 3-3 tie with Cornell in front of a sold-out Madison Square Garden on Saturday night in New York City.

The Terriers (4-7-2) got the game-tying goal with 51 seconds left in the contest and with the extra skater and on the power play to seal the comeback. Cornell (6-2-1) led, 3-1, after two periods, jumping out in front on the strength of a pair of goals in the first five and a half minutes of the game.

Sean Whitney had a goal and an assist, while defensive partner Brendon Nash added a pair of assists to lead the Big Red. Locke Jillson and Blake Gallagher both added a goal for Cornell, with Patrick Kennedy and Colin Greening tallying assists on the night.

For Boston University, Nick Bonino had a goal and an assist, while David Warsofsky and Chris Connolly both had goals, Connolly's coming as the game-tying goal. Joe Pereira and Vinny Saponari both added an assist for the Terriers.

In goal, Boston University netminder Grant Rollheiser had 14 saves for the night, while Cornell's Ben Scrivens picked up 32 saves, one shy of his season high. Cornell finished the night 2-for-5 on the power play, while BU ended 1-for-6 with the man advantage.

Cornell got on the board at the 3:07 mark of the game as Whitney scored his first goal of the season, firing a shot from the bottom of the faceoff circle to the left of Rollheiser for the Big Red's first shot of the night, beating the sophomore and bringing the Cornell crowd to its feet. Nearly two and a half minutes later, it was Patrick Kennedy picking up a loose puck in the Cornell end and sending a pass to a wide-open Jillson, who had gotten in behind the BU defense. Jillson skated in alone on Rollheiser and popped a shot past him, sending the Cornell crowd into a frenzy and forcing Boston University coach Jack Parker to call a timeout to settle his team down.

The first period ended without any further scoring, and the second saw the Terriers get on the board, courtesy of a short-handed goal from Warsofsky. On the same power-play, the Big Red pushed the lead back up to two as Whitney found Gallagher wide open on the weak-side post for the easy tap-in as the penalty on the Terriers' Colby Cohen was set to expire.

Cornell took the two-goal lead into the locker room, and the Terriers cut into the margin at the 4:03 mark of the third period as Bonino led a 2-on-1 rush into the Cornell end. Brendon Nash slid to cut off the passing lane, and Bonino's shot appeared to deflect off Nash's stick and past Scrivens as the Terriers cut the lead to one, where it stood until the final minute.

With Boston University on the power play on a slashing call for Patrick Kennedy, Rollheiser came to the bench for the extra skater, staking the Terriers on a 6-on-4 power play. There, Connolly put a shot on goal that Scrivens thought he had covered up, but both Connolly and referee Bryan Hicks spotted the puck between Scrivens' legs. Connolly reached around with his stick and pushed the puck into the goal, sparking a wild celebration from the BU fans and stunning the Cornell faithful.

Both teams got three shots off during the back-and-forth overtime session, but neither goaltender would budge as they would settle for a 3-3 tie.

Cornell returns to action on Friday, traveling to Troy, N.Y., for a 7 p.m. contest against Rensselaer.
