NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Colin Greening and Evan Barlow scored to lead a Cornell comeback from a three-goal deficit, but the comeback fell short with the Big Red falling at Yale, 4-2, on Friday night at Ingalls Rink in New Haven, Conn.

Yale scored once in the first period and added another pair of goals in the second as the Bulldogs put Cornell into a hole after two periods. Greening then put the Big Red onto the scoreboard and Barlow added a power play goal late in the third period before the Bulldogs capped the win with a goal with 45 seconds to play.

Cornell goaltender Ben Scrivens stopped 25 saves on the night, while Yale netminder Alec Richards was sharp as well, stopping 29 Cornell shots in picking up the victory. Union finished the game 2-for-8 on the power play and added a short-handed goal, while Cornell finished the contest 2-for-10 with the man advantage.

Scrivens was sharp early, stopping each of the first nine shots he faced, but Cornell's first power play chance of the night turned out to be more advantageous for the Bulldogs. After clearing the puck out of the Cornell zone, Scrivens misplayed the puck at his own blue line, and Yale's Sean Backman picked up the loose puck and got around the junior netminder, sliding the puck into the empty net in spite of the diving attempt by Blake Gallagher to keep the puck out of the goal.

Yale picked up another two goals in the second period, first with Brian O'Neill punching home a rebound off a Mark Arcobello shot at the 8:01 mark of the period with the Bulldogs on the power play. Yale then made it a 3-0 game 10 and a half minutes later, again taking advantage of a Cornell penalty but executing a picture-perfect passing play with Arcobello scoring on the weak side post to go ahead by three as the second period came to a close.

Cornell tried to come back, though, capitalizing on an interference call on Yale's Nick Jaskowiak. With 3:28 gone in the third, Colin Greening popped in the Big Red's lone goal of the night, assisted by Blake Gallagher and Riley Nash as the Big Red power play converted for the first time among its seven chances.

Evan Barlow cut the deficit to 3-2 with 2:17 to play in the third on a one-timer with the Big Red on the power play and with the extra skater.

Yale capped the game with a goal by Brian O'Neill in the closing minute, scoring with 45 seconds remaining to seal the game away and stifle the Cornell comeback.

Yale's win, coupled with Dartmouth's 2-0 victory over Princeton in Hanover, N.H., gives the Bulldogs the ECAC Hockey regular-season championship and top seed in the upcoming ECAC Hockey tournament. The Big Red trails Princeton by one point in the race for the second seed, with the Tigers taking on Harvard on Saturday night in Cambridge, Mass.

Cornell closes out the regular season tomorrow night, taking on Brown in Providence, R.I. Game time is 7 p.m. at Meehan Auditorium.
