ITHACA, N.Y. -- Scott Caldwell's goal with five and a half minutes remaining in the game lifted the Cornell men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over visiting St. Bonaventure on Sunday afternoon at Berman Field. The Big Red improved to 2-1-1 with the win, while St. Bonaventure falls to 1-3 on the season.

For the third game in a row, the Big Red scored a late goal to give the team a positive result. Sunday, it was Caldwell's game-winner that lifted Cornell to its second win of the season. Just four games into the season, the Big Red has now surpassed its win total from the 2008 season.

A scoreless first half saw several chances for both teams, but both goalkeepers were solid in preventing the early goal. The Bonnies got on the board early in the second half, as Fabrizio Savarino collected a low cross from Sam Maheu on the left side and put a shot past Cornell goalkeeper Scott Brody in the 53rd minute.

The St. Bonaventure lead lasted just four and a half minutes, however, as the Big Red drew level in the 57th minute. On a Cornell free kick, Caldwell played the ball to the back post, where it was headed by Matt Bouraee and deflected off St. Bonaventure goalkeeper David Flynn and onto the goalpost. The rebound came off the post to the foot of Jimmy Lannon, who buried the ball into the open net to tie the score at one.

Cornell finally got the go-ahead goal in the 85th minute when Kyle Parsons attacked down the left flank, playing a through-ball to Bouraee inside the penalty area. Flynn came out to challenge Bouraee, who slotted the ball across the box to Caldwell. Caldwell's first touch was a shot that was bound for the center of the goal, and deflected off a St. Bonaventure defender's leg and up under the crossbar into the top netting of the goal.

The Big Red was then able to finish off the remaining time of the match without allowing a serious chance for St. Bonaventure to tie.

Cornell finished the match with a 17-14 advantage in shots, though Scott Brody had seven saves to five for SBU's David Flynn.

The Big Red returns to action on Friday, taking on Monmouth in the opening game of the Princeton Invitational in Princeton, N.J. Match time is 5 p.m.
