PRINCETON, N.J. --
Chase Aaronson's first career goal was the only scoring of the match as the Cornell men's soccer team closed out the Princeton Invitaitonal with a 1-0 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday afternoon in Princeton, N.J. The win lifts the Big Red to 3-2-1 on the year, while the Knights drop to 2-4 on the season.
Once again for the Big Red, it was second-half heroics that provided the result, as the two teams battled through a scoreless first half. Early in the second, Aaronson collected a pass from
Matt Bouraee, faked his way around FDU goalkeeper Juho Illi and slotted the ball into the back of the net.
Cornell then held on for the victory, with the Big Red out-shooting the Knights by a 7-4 margin in the second half on their way to a 13-9 advantage for the match. Cornell goalkeeper
Scott Brody made five saves for his second shutout of the season, while Illi made five saves in the losing effort for the Knights, a squad that won the Northeast Conference championship last season and advanced to the NCAA tournament.
Cornell placed three players on the all-tournament team, as
Scott Brody,
Matt Bouraee and
Chase Aaronson were each named to the top 11 of the four-team tournament.
Cornell returns to action on Wednesday, battling central New York rival Binghamton in a 7 p.m. match at Berman Field. Wednesday's match has been designated as International Student Day in honor of the six different nations represented by the Big Red soccer program.
