ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell women's soccer team closed out the non-league portion of the 2009 schedule with a 4-2 loss to Bucknell on a cold and rainy Sunday afternoon at Berman Field.
Maneesha Chitanvis and
Hannah Labadie scored goals for the Big Red in the loss.
Bucknell got on the board first in the 30th minute as a high shot from Caitlin Holtz was parried up underneath the crossbar by Cornell goalkeeper
Kelly Murphy to give the Bison an early lead. Cornell responded quickly, with Chitanvis scoring her second goal of the year just seconds later, finishing off a breakaway by dribbling around Bucknell goalkeeper Kathryn Sutton and finishing from six yards out.
But the score would not remain tied for long, as Christa Matlack took a pass from Holtz and skipped a low shot that got underneath Murphy and slipped into the left corner of the goal, giving Bucknell a 2-1 lead it would hold at the half.
Matlack added to the Bucknell score in the 60th minute, finishing off a through-ball from Kayla Yee from 15 yards out past goalkeeper
Megan Bartlett, who came on at the half. Three minutes later, Megan DeGennaro scored from six yards out to lift the Bison to a 4-1 lead.
Cornell continued to fight back, though, as the Big Red got on the scoreboard again with just over eight minutes to play. Earning a corner kick,
Samantha Wright's cross into the box was headed in at the far post by Labadie, cutting the deficit in half, though that would be as close as the Big Red could get.
Sutton stopped seven Cornell shots in taking the win, while neither Murphy nor Bartlett picked up a save for the Big Red. Cornell held a 16-11 advantage in shots along with a 5-2 lead in corner kicks, though the Bison ended up with the victory.
Cornell returns to action on Friday, playing Penn in a 7 p.m. contest in Philadelphia.
