LEWISTON, N.Y. -- Sophomore
Sidra Bonner scored her first career goal, but the Cornell women's soccer team dropped a 3-1 contest to Niagara on Sunday afternoon. The Big Red fell to 0-1-1 on the year, while Niagara improved to 2-1 on the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Megan Bartlett made three saves in her first action of the season, while classmate Sam Wright picked up her first career point, assisting on Bonner's first-half goal. Niagara goalkeeper Ashleigh Bowers made four saves in earning the victory.
Both teams started out flying, as Niagara got on the scoreboard on its first shot just 1:21 into the match as Jamie Raeppel slotted a shot past Barlett for the early lead. Cornell wasted no time in responding, earning a corner kick a minute and a half later. Wright took the corner and found the head of the 5-11 Bonner, who banged home the corner kick to knot the score at one.
Raeppel put the Purple Eagles back on top in the 26th minute, splitting two defenders and finishing past Bartlett. The score remained 2-1 at the half and into the second, when Niagara's Chiara Greco scored off a free kick in the 74th minute for the insurance tally.
Cornell held the edge in corner kicks on the match, 6-3, though Niagara held a slim 16-13 margin in total shots. Niagara put six shots on the Cornell goal, while the Big Red managed five shots on the Niagara goal frame.
Cornell returns to action on Friday night, heading to Lehigh for a 7:30 p.m. contest against the Mountain Hawks.
