Women's Hockey Blanked By Providence In Non-League Finale

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Cornell women's hockey team closed out the non-conference portion of the 2009-10 season with a 3-0 loss at Providence on Sunday afternoon. The loss drops the Big Red to 8-7-2 overall, while Providence improves to 8-7-8 on the season.

Cornell, dressing just 12 skaters for the second straight game, fell behind with 4:04 to play in the first period on a goal by Providence's Ashley Cottrell, her 11th of the season. The Friars scored twice more in the second period, with Jean O'Neil and Amber Yung tallying goals, as Cornell fell into a 3-0 hole. From there, Providence's Genevieve Lacasse finished off the shutout with a total of 29 saves.

Cornell goaltender Amanda Mazzotta stopped 24 shots in taking the loss for the Big Red, which remained hot on the penalty kill, successfully ending all three of Providence's power play chances. Cornell went 0-for-5 on the power play on the night in being shut out for the first time this season.

Cornell returns to league play on Friday when it travels to Harvard for a 7 p.m. contest against the Crimson.
