CEDAR FALLS, Iowa—The Big Red wrestling team finished in sixth place at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals on Sunday afternoon after being narrowly defeated by Boise State, 20-19. At heavyweight, Taylor Moore pinned his opponent in 32 seconds, and 197 pounder Cam Simaz won by major decision. The Big Red picked up other wins by Frank Perrelli (125), Kyle Dake (141) and Justin Kerber (165).

At 125 pounds, Perrelli faced No. 16 Allen Bartelli. After a scoreless first period, the match was deadlocked at 1-1 after each wrestler escaped from their opening down positions in each period. After a scoreless sudden victory round, Perrelli escaped from his starting bottom position when he had choice in overtime. Perrelli won by a 2-1 score after not allowing Bartelli to escape in his tie breaker choice.

No. 10 Mike Grey faced No. 3 Andrew Hochstrasser at 133 pounds. Grey took a 2-1 lead with a takedown from which Hochstrasser escaped. Hochstrasser scored a takedown of his own and took the lead with two back points. The Boise State wrestler escaped from his opening down position in the second and with riding time won a 7-2 decision to tie the team race.

At 141 pounds, No. 5 ranked Dake took on No. 11 Levi Jones. Dake grabbed two takedowns in the first period and rode Jones out from his choice bottom position in the second. Dake escaped from his starting down position in the third and with riding time won a 6-1 decision.

At 149 pounds, Corey Manson lost a 14-5 major decision to No. 7 Jason Chamberlain. Boise State added four more team points when No. 3 Adam Hall won a 14-3 major decision over John Basting at 157 pounds.

No. 12 ranked Kerber and Michael Cuthbertson were scoreless after the first period at 165 pounds. Kerber rolled out of his opening down position in the second to take a 1-0 lead with an escape. Cuthbertson tied up the score in the third with an escape of his own. With 20 seconds left on the clock, Kerber fought for a takedown to win by a 3-1 decision.

At 174 pounds, Colin McDonald saw his first dual action of the year for the Big Red against No. 8 Nathan Lee. McDonald led 2-0 after the first period with a takedown. Lee chose down to start the second period. He reversed McDonald to tie the match and ended up stacking the Big Red wrestler for the pin in 4:58.

No. 14 ranked Steve Bosak faced No. 1 ranked Kirk Smith at 184 pounds. Bosak led 2-1 after the first period with a takedown. Bosak was controlling his opponent well from Smith's opening down position in the second. With 1:02 in riding time, Smith won a 4-2 decision.

At 197 pounds, No. 7 Simaz notched two takedowns over Matt Casperson in the first period. Simaz racked up riding time in the second by not allowing Casperson to escape from his opening down position in the second. Simaz escaped from his choice of bottom in the third and with two takedowns and riding time, won a 10-2 major decision.

At heavyweight, Taylor Moore faced Samuel Zylstra. Zylstra caught hold of Moore early in the first looking to throw him but Moore countered and flattened Zylstra to his back. Moore picked up six team points by pinning Zylstra in 32 seconds.
