Cornell goaltender
Ben Scrivens stopped 20 shots in taking the victory for the Big Red, while Brian Foster stopped 38 of the 42 shots he faced on the night. Cornell went 0-for-3 on the power play, while New Hampshire was held scoreless in seven man-advantage opportunities on the day.
Cornell got on the board at the 7:30 mark of the first period when Gallagher won a faceoff back to
Keir Ross at the point. Ross sent the puck along the boards to Greening behind the goal, and he curled around the goal and sent a centering pass to Gallagher. The senior's first shot was stopped by Foster, but Gallagher collected his own rebound and jammed the puck into the goal for the early lead. Less than a minute later, Scrivens made a fantastic glove save on a shot from the point by Greg Burke to keep the lead intact.
Cornell sucessfully killed off its first penalty, a too-many-men call midway through the first period, and got its first power play on a high-sticking call on the Wildcats' Bobby Butler with 3:12 to play in the first period. With 1:06 to go on the power play,
Justin Krueger was hauled down on a chance at the back post by Stevie Moses, giving Cornell an extended 5-on-3. After head coach
Mike Schafer called timeout, the Big Red won the faceoff and held the puck in the zone for 46 seconds before Foster held onto the puck for a faceoff. Cornell again won the faceoff and worked the puck around to
Brendon Nash, whose slap shot from the point was deflected into the netting behind the goal by Foster. Foster kept the Big Red off the board with a glove save of a
Riley Nash shot just as the penalty to Butler was expiring. New Hampshire was able to kill off the remainder of the penalty to Moses as they went to the locker room at the end of one trailing, 1-0.
New Hampshire's second power play came after a cross-checking penalty on
Nick D'Agostino, and the Wildcats nearly got the equalizer when a shot by Phil DeSimone clanged off the crossbar with just four seconds left on the penalty. Video review of the play confirmed the call on the ice, and Cornell went on the power play after a slashing call on Butler. The Wildcats were able to kill off the penalty, and then got the tying goal with 10:58 gone in the second period.
On the goal, Matt Campanale carried the puck into the Cornell end and faked his way past a pair of Cornell defensemen, as both D'Agostino and
Braden Birch made diving efforts to cut off passes. Campanale worked his way behind the goal and sent a pass back toward the near post, where Mike Sislo ripped a low shot that snuck between the pads of Scrivens.
The tie lasted just a minute and a half, until
Patrick Kennedy ripped his third goal of the year, a hard shot from between the circles that clanged off the post and in, with both
Braden Birch and
Locke Jillson picking up assists on the play.
The Wildcats again drew even following a turnover in the Cornell zone. Stevie Moses picked off a pass at the Cornell blue line and led a 2-on-1 into the Cornell end. The sophomore fired a shot that Scrivens stopped, but the rebound bounced straight up in the air. Campanale was there for the rebound, and whacked it out of the air before it bounced off the shoulder of a Cornell defenseman and into the goal, as the second period ended with the two teams tied, 2-2.
Cornell regained the lead at the 3:49 mark of the third period when
John Esposito hit a shot from between the circles that was saved by Foster to his left, but that was exactly where
Sean Collins was standing, and the sophomore jammed the puck home to put the Big Red back on top. Then, just 3:04 later, the Big Red got another goal when, after keeping the puck in the UNH end for two full shifts including changing lines, Krueger ripped a shot from the right point that
Riley Nash, camped out in front of the goal, redirected up and over the shoulder of Foster for the 4-2 lead.
Joe Scali scored his third goal of the season, putting the puck into an empty net, with 1:59 to play in the game to provide the final margin.
Cornell will now have nearly two full weeks before returning to action, heading to Potsdam, N.Y., on Jan. 15, for a 7 p.m. contest against Clarkson at Cheel Arena.
