No. 2 Iowa State Wrestles Past No. 6 Cornell, 24-13

ITHACA, N.Y.—
The No. 6 ranked Big Red wrestling team took an early lead over No. 2 Iowa State, but the Cyclones powered back to a 24-13 win in Newman Arena on Sunday afternoon. In front of a crowd of 4,267, Troy Nickerson opened the match with a pin over No. 5 Andrew Long at 125 pounds. Mack Lewnes won by major decision at 174, while freshman Kyle Dake won by decision. At halftime, the Big Red inducted four new members into The Hall of Distinguished Wrestling Alumni. Cornell also honored wrestler Adam Frey who passed away in December after battling cancer.

At intermission, Cornell inducted Mark Fergeson '93, Gene Nighman '81, Dale Porter '75 and Patrick Welch '85 into The Hall of Distinguished Wrestling Alumni. The Big Red also honored Adam Frey with a presentation of his singlet to his mother, Cindy. For every person in attendance at the match, a sponsor made a donation to the Adam Frey Foundation. Nickerson opened the dual off with a bang for the Big Red quickly taking down Long less than 30 seconds into the bout. The Big Red wrestler immediately started turning Long to his back looking for the pin. Nickerson grabbed six team points for the Big Red with a win by fall in 2:03.

At 133 pounds, No. 7 Mike Grey faced the Cyclones No. 12 Nick Fanthrope. Fanthorpe shot in at Grey with 45 seconds left in the first period. Grey tried to counter, but Fanthorpe caught him earning a takedown and two quick back points. Grey notched a takedown in the second, but was unable to earn enough points to overcome his first period deficit. Fanthorpe won a 6-3 decision.

Dake took a 2-0 lead in the first period with a takedown over Dalton Jenson. Dake rode his opponent out for the remainder of the period, and did not allow Jensen to escape from his starting down position in the second. Dake reversed Jenson to start the third and with another takedown won a 7-1 decision.

At 149 pounds, Corey Manson took on No. 10 Mitch Mueller. Manson came out tough against the Cyclone wrestler, but Mueller went up 2-0 with a minute left in the first with a takedown. Mueller grabbed the only point of the third with an opening escape. Manson fought for a takedown in the third, but Mueller notched one instead and with riding time won a 6-2 decision.

John Basting had a 1-0 lead over Andrew Sorenson at 157 pounds when the Cyclone wrestler was hit with a technical violation for fleeing the mat. Sorenson earned an opening escape in the second. Basting took a 3-1 lead with a takedown, but Sorenson reversed him to tie the score. Sorenson notched a takedown in the third and with riding time won a 6-3 decision to tie the team score at nine all.

At 165 pounds, Justin Kerber faced No. 3 Jon Reader. Reader notched an early takedown in the first and never looked back on his way to a 14-4 major decision to give Iowa State its first lead of the day.

Lewnes followed by tying the team score back up at 13 all with a major decision over Chris Spangler. Lewnes dominated his match and with three takedowns and three back points, he won an 11-2 decision.

At 184, No. 17 Steve Bosak took on No. 8 Jerome Ward. The two were scoreless after the first period, and Ward notched the only point of the second with an opening escape. Bosak tied up the bout with an escape of his own in the third. Bosak was looking for the winning points, but Ward took the lead with a takedown with 39 seconds left on the clock. Bosak worked hard for the escape and was quickly looking to notch a takedown of his own. Ward evaded the Big Red wrestler and won a 3-2 decision to give his team back the lead, 16-13.

No. 1 ranked Jake Varner at 197 pounds faced Cornell's No. 5 Cam Simaz. Varner earned five team points for Iowa State with a 19-1 technical fall in 6:56.

In the last bout of the day, Josh Arnone faced No. 4 David Zabriskie. The two were scoreless after the first period and Zabriskie took a 1-0 lead in the second with an opening escape. Arnone tied the bout with an escape in the third. Zabriskie won a 3-1 decision with a takedown with 16 seconds left in the match.

Cornell will continue home action next weekend when the Big Red will play host to Columbia and Hofstra.
