HAMILTON, N.Y. --
Franck Onambele and
Will Ogden scored first-half goals and the Cornell defense made a 2-0 halftime lead stand up as the Big Red scored a 2-0 victory against Colgate on Tuesday night in Hamilton, N.Y. The win lifts Cornell to 4-3-4 on the season and drops the Raiders to 6-3-3 on the year.
Cornell jumped on the Raiders, who were ranked in last week's top 25 and received votes in this week's national poll, early in the first half with Onambele scoring the eventual game-winner just 3:16 into the match, heading home a throw-in from
Jimmy Lannon. Ogden then added the insurance tally at the 37:19 mark of the match, scoring in a mad scramble in front of the Colgate net to give the Big Red the 2-0 lead going into the break.
The two goals were the only two shots on goal credited to the Big Red on the night, with Colgate netminder Chris Miller not making a save for the contest. Cornell goalkeeper
Rick Pflasterer picked up four saves, including three in the first half, for his third shutout of the season.
The win marked the 10th victory in the head coaching career of Cornell bench boss
Jaro Zawislan, who improves his record through a season and a half to 10-9-9.
The Big Red returns to action on Saturday when it plays host to Yale in a 7 p.m. contest at Berman Field in Ithaca. Saturday's game is being billed as the "Break The Berman Record" as the Big Red will attempt to set a new attendance record at its home field. The first 200 students in attendance will receive a free t-shirt, while all other fans will receive a Cornell drawstring backpack.
