ITHACA, N.Y. -- Sophomore
Maneesha Chitanvis scored the game's only goal in the 15th minute to give the Cornell women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Yale on Saturday afternoon at Berman Field. The win lifts Cornell to 6-6 on the year and 1-3 in Ivy League play, while Yale falls to 5-7-1 overall and 1-3 in league play.
Abigail Apistolas tallied an assist on Chitanvis' game-winner, while goalkeeper
Megan Bartlett stopped six shots, all in the second half, to post the shutout for the Big Red. For Yale, Ayana Sumiyasu made one save in taking the loss.
Cornell took the lead at the 14:24 mark of the match when a ball was played into the Yale penalty area and cleared out toward midfield. Apistolas collected the ball with her back to the Bulldog goal, turned and slotted a through ball that Chitanvis ran onto past the Yale defense. She then calmly slotted a shot past Sumiyasu into the lower right corner of the net.
Yale had several opportunities to tie the game late in the second half, but Bartlett was up to the task of keeping the Bulldogs off the scoreboard. She made a pair of point-blank stops back-to-back on Yale's Mary Kubiuk and Miyuki Hino to keep her shutout intact.
The Big Red returns to action on Sunday, traveling to Brown for a 2 p.m. contest against the Bears in Providence, R.I.
