ITHACA, N.Y. -- Penn's Travis Cantrell scored the game's only goal with 1:04 left to play in the second half, as the Quakers sent the Big Red to a 1-0 defeat in an Ivy League men's soccer game on Saturday night at Berman Field. Cornell slipped to 3-3-3 on the year with Penn improving to 7-2 in the Ivy League opener for both teams.
In a match that was evenly played throughout, it was a missed clearance on the defensive end late that cost the Big Red the game. Nearing one minute remaining in regulation, Penn's Alex Tuch took the ball down the left sideline and sent a cross into the Cornell penalty area that the Big Red defense couldn't clear out of danger. The ball went to Cantrell, who redirected the ball inside the near post past Cornell goalkeeper
Rick Pflasterer.
Cornell had a pair of cracks at getting a tying goal in the closing seconds, getting a throw-in deep in Penn territory that was knocked out for a corner kick in the game's final seconds. The corner kick was sent in with five seconds left, but parried out of danger by Penn netminder Ben Berg.
Pflasterer picked up one save in the game, while Berg made a pair of stops in the victory.
Cornell returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Harvard for a 1:30 p.m. contest in Cambridge, Mass.
