Final Brackets
GREENSBORO, N.C.—The Big Red wrestling team tied for first place as a team at the Southern Scuffle on Thursday. Cornell totaled 151.5 points to finish deadlocked with Penn State.
Kyle Dake (149),
Justin Kerber (165) and
Cam Simaz (197) all earned individual titles.
Steve Bosak finished in second place at 184 pounds, while
Mack Lewnes places third at 174 and
Frank Perrelli took fifth at 125.
Cornell held a one and half point lead over Penn State heading into the finals. The Big Red and the Nittany Lions each crowned three champions, but Penn State's technical fall by David Taylor at 157 pounds tied the team score.
At 149 pounds, Dake faced Penn State's Frank Molinaro in the finals. The two were scoreless in the first period. Anticipating a possible tough escape, Molinaro chose neutral to start the second period. Late in the second period Dake shot in and was awarded two points by the referee, but the takedown was waved off as the two wrestlers tumbled out of bounds. Dake chose to start the third period down on the mat and with the only point of the bout with an escape, he won a 1-0 decision.
Kerber took on Minnesota's Cody Yohn in the finals at 165 pounds. Yohn was awarded a quick takedown to start the first period, and Kerber escaped to come within a point. Kerber shot in on his opponent's legs late in the first period for a takedown and road out the clock. Kerber deferred to start the second period, and Yohn chose down. The Golden Gopher escaped to take a 3-3 tie into the third period. Kerber chose down to start the third period, and earned an escape. Yohn shot in on Kerber, but the Big Red wrestler defended his way to a takedown. Yohn would escape, but Kerber won a 6-4 decision to earn the title.
At 184 pounds, No. 3 nationally ranked Bosak faced No. 2 Christopher Honeycutt of Edinboro in the finals. The two wrestlers traded shots in the first period but were scoreless after three minutes. Honeycutt chose down to start the second period and in a scramble earned two points for a reversal. Bosak got the escape, but with 30 seconds left in the period Honeycutt took him down again. Bosak chose to start the third period down and notched an escape with one minute left in the bout. Bosak was looking to score, but Honeycutt countered his shot for another takedown to win a 7-2 bout.
In the Big Red's last match in the finals, Simaz faced George Mason's Cayle Byers at 197 pounds. Simaz took a shot in the first period, but was unable to convert and the two went off the mat. Simaz chose bottom in the second period and within 30 seconds escaped. Byers was awarded a quick takedown , but Simaz would escape and notch a takedown of his own. Byers escaped at the end of the period to move the score to 4-3. Byers escaped from his opening down position in the third period to tie the score at 4-4 at the end of regulation. Neither wrestler scored in sudden victory taking the match to a tiebreaker. Byers chose to start his choice down on the mat but was unable to escape Simaz's clutches. Simaz won the match by escaping from him down position at his choice.
At 125 pounds, Perrelli wrestled for the Big Red. He opened the tournament with a come-from-behind win by decision over Indiana's Justin Brooks, 6-5. Perrelli fought past Citadel's Richard Alarcon Jr., 4-1, and he followed by defeating two-time NCAA qualifier, Brad Pataky, 5-4 to advance to the quarterfinals. On Thursday morning, Perrelli was narrowly defeated by No. 7 Zachary Sanders of Minnesota, 3-2, to send him to the consolation round. In his next match, he bounced back with a commanding win over Hofstra's Steve Bonanno, 10-4. Perrelli nearly had his opponent pinned, but Bonanno tapped out and Perrelli was awarded four points. After a win by medical forfeit to Garrett Frey (Princeton), Perrelli was caught mid-move by Oregon State's Jason Lara and pinned in 1:15. Perrelli finished strong in fifth place after winning by major decision over Nittany Lion, Frank Martellotti, 12-4.
Joe Stanzione competed at 133 pounds and went 3-2 for the tournament. In his first match, Stanzione earned bonus points for the Big Red, winning by fall in 34 seconds over Ohio's Gavin Moore. He was sent to the consolation bracket after falling to Princeton's Anthony Comunale. Stanzione notched more bonus points in his next two matches with another pin and a major decision.
Three wrestlers hit the mats at 141 pounds for Cornell. Freshman
Chris Villalonga was 2-2 for the tournament, while senior
Corey Manson lost two close matches in sudden victory. Freshman
Mike Nevinger won his first match by tech fall, 17-0, over VMI's Ryan Goodsell, but dropped his next two bouts.
Joining Dake in the 149 pound weight class was freshman
Ryan Dunphy. The rookie won a high-scoring 14-12 decision over George Mason's Donald Takagi but was knocked out by his next two opponents.
At 157 pounds, freshman
Craig Eifert grappled for Cornell. The rookie opened with an 11-9 win over Liberty's Julian Colon. He followed with a win by major decision over UNCG's Justin Rice, 9-1. Eifert advanced to the quarterfinals with a 4-3 win by decision over Bloomsburg's Frank Hickman. Eifert lost in the quarterfinals to Michigan's Brandon Zeerip and dropped an 11-2 major decision to North Carolina's Corey Mock.
Jesse Shanaman also saw action at 157 pounds notching a 2-2 record. At 165 pounds, sophomore
Cody Hutcheson lost two matches by one point.
At 174 pounds, senior
Mack Lewnes finished in third place with a 5-1 record. Lewnes pinned his first two opponents, Quinton Godley (NC State), and Brandon Johnson (Kent State),in 2:13 and 2:46, respectively. Lewnes defeated North Carolina's Thomas Ferguson by a 12-1 major decision to advance to the semifinals. In the semis, Lewnes faced No. 10 Ed Ruth of Penn State. Ruth proved to be a tough-clutching opponent and Lewnes had a tough time escaping his clutches throughout the match. Lewnes lost his first match of the season to the Nittany Lion freshman, 11-6. The Big Red captain quickly shook off the loss and went to work in the consolation bracket to earn team points for Cornell. Lewnes defeated Michigan's Justin Zeerip, 9-3, before shutting out Minnesota's Scott Glasser by a 13-0 major decision to finish in third place.
Michael Alexander also wrestled at 174 pounds for Cornell and went 2-2.
Colin McDonald went 0-2 for Cornell at 184.
At heavyweight, Styker Lane went 2-2 while
Oney Snyder was 1-2. Both wrestlers won by fall in the consolation bracket.
The Big Red will wrestle for the first time in 2011 at the National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa, Jan. 8-9.
