HANOVER, N.H. -- Dartmouth scored three straight unanswered goals in the span of 4:43 late in the third period to steal a 5-4 victory over Cornell in men's hockey action on Saturday night in Hanover, N.H. The loss, Cornell's third straight on a Saturday night, drops the Big Red into a tie for second place in ECAC Hockey with Union, two points behind league-leading Yale.
Riley Nash,
Patrick Kennedy,
Locke Jillson and
Colin Greening each had a goal for the Big Red, while Nash added two assists and Greening had one.
Erik Axell also had an assist for Cornell, which fell to 16-8-3 overall and 13-5-2 in ECAC Hockey action.
Ben Scrivens took the loss, making 27 saves.
For Dartmouth, five different players recorded a goal, with Adam Estoclet, Joe Stejskal and Scott Fleming leading the way with a goal and an assist. Matt Reber and Doug Jones had a pair of assists, while netminder James Mello made 35 saves in the victory. Dartmouth went 2-for-4 on the power play while holding Cornell scoreless in three power-play chances.
Dartmouth got on the board first with Stejskal's goal just 1:40 into the contest, ripping a slap shot from the point past Scrivens. Cornell would respond with three goals over the span of two and a half minutes, with first
Riley Nash evening the score with his goal at the 7:29 mark of the period. Jillson then added a goal at the 9:05 mark of the period, collecting a loose puck at the Dartmouth blue line and skating in and wrapping the puck around the goal, sneaking it past Mello. Just 1:02 later, it was Kennedy putting the puck in the net with Nash picking up an assist as Cornell went to the locker room ahead, 3-1.
After a scoreless second period, Dartmouth cut into the lead early in the third with a goal from Fleming at the 6:26 mark. With the Big Green on the power play, Fleming put back a rebound off a shot from Reber that made the score 3-2 in favor of Cornell. The Big Red got that goal back in the form of
Colin Greening's marker at the 8:13 mark of the third period, but that would only set the stage for Dartmouth's rally.
Nick Walsh got the Big Green started with 7:00 to play in the period, and Joe Gaudet evened the score at the 16:06 mark of the period, converting on a power-play called against
Joe Devin for interference. With 2:17 to play in the game, Estoclet scored the game-winner, as Dartmouth held on for the 5-4 victory.
Cornell returns to action on Friday, returning home for the final weekend of the regular season. The Big Red will take on Union in a 7 p.m. contest at Lynah Rink. Before the game, a special ceremony will be held to retire the numbers of two of the greatest players in Cornell history, Ken Dryden and Joe Nieuwendyk. Fans are encouraged to arrive early to help celebrate the careers of these two legendary players.
