ALBANY, N.Y. -- Ben Scrivens stopped all 32 shots he faced as the Cornell men's hockey team claimed the 2010 ECAC Hockey championship with a 3-0 shutout over Union on Saturday night at the Times Union Center in Albany, N.Y. The shutout was the third straight for the senior netminder, who broke his own school-record shutout streak with the victory.

Joe Devin, Sean Whitney and Patrick Kennedy each had a goal for the Big Red on the day, while Tyler Roeszler, Mike Devin, Riley Nash and Brendon Nash each chipped in an assist. Scrivens went a perfect 32-for-32 in extending his shutout streak to 230:24 over the last three-plus games, breaking his old mark of 206:44, set at the beginning of his junior season.

Cornell (21-8-4) went 2-for-8 on the power play for the night, while holding Union scoreless in five power play attempts. Dutchman goaltender Keith Kinkaid picked up 31 saves in taking the loss for Union, whose season ends with a 21-12-6 record. Union capped its season by advancing to the league title game for the first time in program history.

Cornell got out in front in the first period when Joe Devin scored his ninth goal of the year with 4:51 to play in the first period. Mike Devin sent the puck behind the net for Tyler Roeszler, who caught Kinkaid leaning the wrong way and fed Joe Devin in front, where the junior popped the puck into the goal. The Big Red took that lead into the first intermission, out-shooting Union, 12-11, in the period.

In the second, the Big Red had a pair of power play chances early, but could not get the puck past Kinkaid. Finally, on a too-many-men penalty on the Dutchmen late in the second period gave Cornell the opening it needed. Late on the power play chance, Brendon Nash blasted a shot from the center point that was stopped by Kinkaid, with the rebound dropping in front of the crease. Riley Nash came crashing in from the right of Kinkaid and jarred the puck loose, where Whitney spotted it, wheeled around and jammed the puck into the net on the forehand, staking Cornell to a 2-0 lead with 2:35 to play in the period.

Cornell cleared away the third period, not allowing the Dutchmen a solid chance at the goal until late in the period when, with 37.7 seconds to play, the Dutchmen had a scramble in front of the goal. The goal came off its moorings with a whistle, and the officials reviewed the play, finding upon replay that the puck never entered the goal. As the final seconds ticked down, Patrick Kennedy sent the puck the length of the ice for an empty net goal to seal the final margin and give the Big Red its 12th league title.

Cornell will now await the NCAA tournament selection show, which will take place on Sunday morning at 11:30 a.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN2.
