ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell softball team had its six-game win streak snapped as Syracuse swept a doubleheader from the Big Red on Thursday afternoon at Niemand*Robison Field, earning 4-1 and 10-0 victories. The Big Red fell to 21-10, while Syracuse improved to 21-16.
Jenna Caira controlled the first game, both on the mound and at the plate. The Canadian National Team member allowed one run and seven hits while striking out nine in picking up the complete game win in the opener while also blasting a pair of solo home runs. She got out of a seventh-inning jam, as Cornell looked to rally. The Big Red plated one run and had runners on second and third with two outs, but a drive into the gap off the bat of Shannon Crane was snatched out of the air at the last second by Veronica Grant for the game's final out, snapping the Big Red's six-game win streak. Both Devon March and Elise Menaker had a pair of hits.
The Orange put up eight runs in the sixth inning of game two to end the contest an inning early, but not before Morgan Cawley ended Stacy Kuwik's no-hit bid in the bottom of the sixth. Keuwi ended the afternoon with a one-hit shutout, striking out eight with just one walk in the complete game victory. Ashley Dimon went 3-for-3 and Stephanie Watts was 2-for-2 in the victory. Caira slammed her third home run on the day to cap her outstanding afternoon.
