PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Cornell softball coach
Dick Blood became the second coach in any sport in Big Red athletic history to register 500 career wins as his team swept a doubleheader from Penn, winning games by scores of 5-4 and 13-5 on Saturday afternoon. The victories improved the Big Red to 23-10 (9-1 Ivy), while the Quakers fell to 12-17 (6-4 Ivy).
In game one, Cornell rallied from a 3-0 first inning deficit thanks to home runs by
Kristen Towne in the fifth and a two-run shot by
Elise Menaker in the sixth. Cornell then put together a pair of run in the top of the seventh to take its first lead on a
Erica Gaeta two-run pinch-hit single to score
Devon March and
Ali Tomlinson. The Quakers got a run back in the boottom of the inning on a solo homer, but
Elizabeth Dalrymple closed the door to pick up her 12th win of the year and hand Blood his 500th victory.
Dalrymple allowed only one run after the first inning and struck out nine with just one walk in picking up her 12th victory of the year. Tomlinson was 3-for-4, whole both Menaker and
Alyson Intihar had a pair of hits.
In game two, Cornell pounded out 16 hits, including eight extra-base hits. Cornell's six doubles is tied for the third-most in a game in Big Red history. Menaker had a monster game with seven RBI, including a grand slam in the second and a two-run double in the seventh. Intihar was a perfect 4-for-4 with a walk in the contest with four runs scored. She opened the game with a home run to begin the contest, setting the tone as the Big Red scored 10 runs in the first three innings.
Ashley Garvey was 3-for-5, while
Shannon Crane,
Vanessa Leonhard and
Erin Keene each had a pair of hits.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow beginning at 12:30 p.m.
