ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell softball team swept a midweek non-league doubleheader from Albany, knocking off the Great Danes 3-1 and 8-4 on Wednesday afternoon at Niemand*Robison Field. The Big Red collected 18 hits in the two victories in improving to 17-8. Albany fell to 12-12 with the losses.

Elise Menaker was 3-of-7 with a pair of doubles and Devon March was 3-for-4 as 18 different players got an opportunity to start. The Big Red pitching staff surrendered just three earned runs in the two games.

In game one, the Big Red opened the contest with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning and never trailed. An Ashley Garvey double to left centerfield scored Menaker and Cassie Walisiak, and after Albany got back within 2-1 in the fourth, the Big Red got its run back. Elizabeth Dalrymple was able to limit the damage in the top half by getting a popup and a strikeout with a runner on first to make sure the Great Danes weren't able to knot the score. Cornell added an insurance run when Erin Keene slapped a single up the middle with two outs, allowing Ali Tomlinson to score from second base. Dalrymple did the rest, allowing just one hit in the final three innings of the win in improving to 9-2 on the season.

The Big Red's seven hits were spread between seven players, with Garvey driving in a pair of runs. Dalrymple allowed just three hits and an unearned run in her complete game victory, striking out eight and walking one.

Devon March went 3-for-4 with three RBI and Menaker was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Morgan Cawley also had a pair of hits. Cornell had four doubles. The Big Red received excellent starting pitching again in game two, with Lauren Marx picking up the victory. She went five strong innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs while striking out three.

After a quiet opening, the Big Red exploded for five runs in the third off Albany starter Allie Weiser, who allowed just two earned runs among the eight Cornell scored. The Big Red took advantage of two Great Dane errors in the inning, though a clean double by March to left scored two as the big blow. The lead grew to 6-0 before the visitors plated a pair of runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings. Albany went 1-2-3 in the final frame to give the Big Red the sweep.

Cornell will hit the road for Ivy play this weekend, meeting Yale for a doubleheader on Friday before heading off to Brown on Saturday for two games.
