TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Ivy League softball champion Big Red had its season come to an end at the NCAA regionals after a 7-0 loss to No. 14 Oklahoma State on Saturday afternoon at Rita Hillenbrand Memorial Softball Stadium. Cornell ended its season with a 37-15 record while the Cowgirls advanced to Saturday evening's elimination game against Hofstra for the right to play Arizona on Sunday.
Freshman
Kristen Towne completed her outstanding rookie campaign with a pair of hits, while the Ivy League's all-time hits and runs scored leader
Alyson Intihar, a two-time Ancient Eight Player of the Year, added a leadoff single to open the contest. Also ending their careers were three-time All-Ivy pick
Elise Menaker, three-year starters
Ashley Garvey and
Devon March, Arizona native
Izzy Pines and two-year starter
Vanessa Leonhard behind the plate. March and
Marissa Amiraian joined Towne and Intihar in the hit column.
Cornell had runners on first and second with one out in the first, but couldn't cash in. That would come back and haunt the Big Red, who were the home team on the scoreboard. After threatening for two innings, the Cowgirls finally broke through with five runs in the third, all coming with two outs. The first two runs came on a bases loaded single up the middle by Sam Heinlein with two outs. A bloop double by Megan Castle off of
Lauren Marx and a two-run single by Chelsea Garcia made it 5-0.
OSU added two runs in the fourth, but
Elizabeth Dalrymple was able to shut the nationally ranked Cowgirls the rest of the way. The two-time Ivy Pitcher of the Year scattered five hits in four innings with three strikeouts.
