ITHACA, N.Y. – The Big Red men's soccer team controlled the game from start to finish as it defeated Saint Joseph's, 3-1, this evening at Berman Field. With the victory, the Big Red evened its record at 2-2-1, while SJU remains winless at 0-5.
The Big Red held the significant advantage in shots (33-10), shots on goal (10-3) and penalty corners (10-5) and enjoyed some balanced scoring with three goals from three different Cornell players.
The Hawks' goalie Michael Moulton had a busy day with seven saves in the loss, while Cornell's
Rick Pflasterer stopped two shots, both of which came in the second half, to preserve the victory.
Jimmy Lannon put Cornell up, 1-0, early in the game, scoring just 1:51 into the contest off a direct free-kick. While setting up, Lannon astutely recognized that the referee had whistled the start of play, but Moulton was out of position, allowing the junior midfielder to easily score on an open net.
Cornell had several other solid scoring opportunities early on, forcing Moulton to make six of his seven saves in the first half, while hitting both the crossbar and the post one time each.
The second half continued to be all Cornell in the early going with the Big Red scoring twice more.
Chase Aaronson made it a 2-0 contest in the 59th minute when
Will Ogden sent a beautifully placed long ball behind the SJU defenders, allowing Aaronson to run onto the ball and beat Moulton near-post.
Just over 20 minutes later a shot by
Daniel Haber was blocked by a Hawks' defender, only to be collected in front of the goal by
Ben Kenyon who scored to put the Big Red up, 3-0.
With time running down in the contest, SJU turned up the heat and managed to get on the board in the 86th minute when DJ Salmon scored off a corner kick, but that was as close as it would get.
Cornell is back in action on Sunday, Sept. 19, when it welcomes Canisius to Berman Field at 3 p.m.
