Pair of Late Goals Lifts Field Hockey Over Lehigh, 4-3

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Big Red field hockey team scored twice in the final 6:26 of the contest to erase a one-goal deficit and steal a 4-3 victory from Lehigh this afternoon at Ulrich Field. With the win, Cornell's 17th consecutive against the Mountain Hawks, the Big Red improved to 4-6 on the season, while Lehigh fell to 3-11.

Sophomore Brittany Thompson had a tremendous day offensively, posting a pair of assists and scoring one goal to lead the Big Red, while a pair of rookies, Katherine Stone and Ann DiPastina, both registered their first collegiate goals, with DiPastina scoring the game-winner of an assist from Stone. Hannah Balleza also found the back of the net to round out the scoring for Cornell, while Stone and Genevieve Collins collected one assist apiece.

In between the pipes, Carolyn Horner got the start and made five saves and allowed two goals in the first half before Alex Botte came on in relief and finished the day with three saves and one goal-against to earn the victory.

Lehigh got goals from Kimberly Eng, Kelsey Zeswitz and Caitlin Donnelly, with Steph Fratoni registering a pair of assists to go along with an assist from Abby Tilton. Goalie Sierra Segear made six saves in the loss.

Cornell held the slight edge in shots (15-14), but the Mountain Hawks had a significant edge in penalty corners (10-3).

The Big Red put tremendous pressure on Lehigh throughout the opening moments of the first half and took an early 1-0 lead in the seventh minute of action when Stone tipped a penalty corner shot by Thompson into the goal.

Eng knotted the game at the 22:08 mark on a quick restart off a penalty corner as Fratoni sent the inserting pass directly to Eng, who beat Horner to make it a 1-1 game.

Another penalty corner helped the home team to a 2-1 advantage in the 29th minute when Zeswitz tipped a shot by Fratoni into the goal along the near post.

The Big Red found the equalizer at the 48:12 mark when Thompson found Balleza all alone in front of the Lehigh goal and the sophomore made it a 2-2 game.

The stalemate was short-lived, however, as a shot by Lehigh was blocked and the ball caromed to Donnelly, who was all alone on the far post and beat Botte to restore a 3-2 lead to the home team in the 53rd minute.

Cornell knotted the game once more in the 64th minute when Thompson converted on a pass from Collins and the Big Red went up for good just 1:50 later when DiPastina collected a pass from Stone and put it in the net.

The Big Red returns to Ithaca to face Bucknell on Marsha Dodson Field on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 3 p.m.
