SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Union's Matt Hatch scored a pair of goals as the ninth-ranked Dutchmen defeated Cornell in an ECAC Hockey men's hockey contest on Friday night at Messa Rink in Schenectady, N.Y. Cornell goaltender Mike Garman made 32 stops in the loss for the Big Red.
Cornell (11-10-3, 9-6-2 ECAC Hockey) was held to just nine shots on the night, with Union (21-7-3, 13-3-1) goaltender Keith Kinkaid stopping all nine for the shutout. Union also got goals from Daniel Carr and Kevin Sullivan on the night, with John Simpson adding a pair of assists. Jeremy Welsh, Josh Jooris, Adam Presizniuk, Kelly Zajac and Wayne Simpson each added one assist for the Dutchmen, who finished the night 1-for-4 on the power play. Cornell was held scoreless in two attempts with the man advantage.
Union got on the board just 2:50 into the contest when, with the Dutchmen on a power play, Jooris sent the puck from behind the Cornell net to the corner to the left of Garman for Welsh, who quickly fed a pass into the slot for a streaking Carr, who one-timed a shot that beat Garman high to the stick side for the early 1-0 lead.
Just three minutes later, a turnover deep in the Cornell end led to the Dutchmen's second goal. Zajac dispossessed Brisson behind the Cornell goal and fed a pass to Presizniuk, who ripped a shot that Garman partially stopped, but the puck slipped through his legs. After trickling across the crease, a scramble in the goal mouth led to Hatch poking the puck into the net for the 2-0 Union lead.
The Dutchmen added a third goal 1:36 into the third period when Wayne Simpson send a centering pass toward the Cornell goal and Sullivan got a stick on it, popping it up off the ice and over the shoulder of Garman to make the score 3-0. Hatch then added an empty-net tally with 5:49 to play with his shot from just outside the Cornell blue line.
Cornell is back in action on Saturday, taking on eighth-ranked Rensselaer in a special 3:30 p.m. start at the Houston Field House in Troy, a game that will be televised live on the NHL Network.
