Fortino's Game-Winner Lifts Women's Hockey Over St. Lawrence

CANTON, N.Y. -- Laura Fortino's goal with 12:50 to play in the third period lifted the Cornell women's hockey team to a 2-1 victory over St. Lawrence on Saturday afternoon at Appleton Arena in Canton, N.Y. With the win, the Big Red have clinched ECAC Hockey regular season championship and the top seed in the upcoming ECAC Hockey tournament.

Lauriane Rougeau added a goal and Chelsea Karpenko tallied a pair of assists for the Big Red (23-1-1, 17-0-1 ECAC Hockey), with Hayley Hughes adding an assist. Lauren Slebodnick picked up 25 saves in the victory for the Big Red, as Cornell finished the night 2-for-7 on the power play.

For St. Lawrence (13-14-2, 8-9-0 ECAC Hockey), Mel Desrochers scored the lone goal of the night with Karell Emard and Kelly Sabatine picking up assists. Maxie Weisz made 33 saves in the loss for the Saints, who went scoreless in four power-play chances.

St. Lawrence got on the board first with Desrochers' goal midway through the second period to break the scoring, but Rougeau added a power-play tally later in the period to knot the score at one. Then, in the third, it was Fortino adding another power-play goal at the 7:10 mark that would turn out to be the game-winner.

Cornell returns home next weekend to close out the home portion of the regular season next weekend, taking on Brown and Yale in a pair of contests at Lynah Rink.
